So as some of you know, I took a race school this weekend to get my regional competition license, and be able to compete in our local racing.
Well, I got through it all in one piece.
I took my MSP out for the in-car instruction laps, and then when I went to take out the race car (89 Nissan 240sx), I only got two laps of practice because there was a leak in one of the calipers, and by the time that was finished, the practice sessions were over yesterday.
Here's my fire suit - as you can tell, I was very easy to pick out in a crowd.
This morning, I got out during practice and qualifying, and got a couple laps in, when I was coming through a turn, and the car sputtered and died. The tow truck came along when that session was over and towed me back to our garage area (see: tarp cover). The air intake had fallen off. Dammit! so they Duct taped it back on and then it was time for the rookie race in which I was starting on the pole.
I got up to the pits and we did out formation and warm up laps, got a rolling start, and I was able to hold the second place driver off for 5 corners before he overtook me, but there was still someone behind me, so I was running 2nd out of 3.
Well, on the LAST LAP, I hit a little patch of dirt/gravel on the track, and the back came around on me. I spun backwards off the track into the grass and came to a stop, sat there for a second to gather myself, then pulled back onto the track to finish the lap and the race.
After that was done, my boyfriend took the race car out for the GT race, and nearly at the end of that, there was a red flag because another driver had planted his car in the trees off one of the corners. The field was bunched up and there was a restart. One problem: when they were restarting, one car slowed to bump-start another, and there was a chain reaction of braking, which ended on the passenger's back corner of our race car.
A Ford Escort rounded the corner and didn't slow in time. My boyfriend continued to go, but then heard a dragging sound and came back into the pits.
One of the straps for the gas tank had let go and it was dragging on the ground. Upon further inspection, we noticed the whole right side of the trunk floor was crumpled up to the wheel well, and the rear quarter panel was destroyed.

So our weekend was over.
Now, we need to rip out all the bent pieces and put in a new trunk floor. And while we're at it, we're putting in a fuel cell instead of a stock gas tank.
Wish me luck on the rebuild!
