Thinking of buying this Short Ram Intake. Opinions?

Is there any reason this would not do a good job on my P5?
Will I have any problem mounting the old MAF housing in that middle joint? I assume that's where it should go. What do y'all think about it?
And what's so special about the $250 kits that this one won't do?

i have that same intake and i had no problem putting everything on. it works fine for me, looks good a sound s great.
the only different about the 250 dollars one its that its spouse to go all the way down ( behind your bumper) a friend of mine has it and it hardly fits where it says it spouse to go.

The longer Cold Air Intake goes down behind the bumper, but some of the Short Ram Intakes are that expensive too. Maybe they have a little slicker air flow, but anybody that has an FS-DE engine knows by now that small changes don't do anything noticeable to the power output. Maybe the ducting costs $35 and the three AEM letters cost another $200?

The cost savings are in the materials used. Those cheap ebay filters fall apart and the metal used in the piping are pretty flimsy. Mostly they are just knock offs of the more expensive Injen, AEM, and K&N pieces.

Sounds good, at least it will work for a while. I only put 3k miles on it a year.

I learned a long time ago that getting anal about bolting expensive but basic things on the FS-DE engine is a waste of time, because it never boosts the horses much. The best thing I ever did to my stock engine was to gut the plastic in front of the front air inlet and bore out the blocked off diamonds in the grill underneath it. Air comes in the grill, up through where the cut out plastic was and into the intake. Probably with a little force, home made ram air.(cool)
The only reason I'm doing this is because the air duct is cracked between the accordion ridges. That gives it colder swirling air than the MAF senses so it screws it all up. I bet the shiny new cool sounding SRI will develop less power than my home made mod. But that tube is more expensive than the SRI.

i've always wondered if that short ram was good, cuz if its gonna do practically the same thing and still give a decent sound then i don't see why not getting it. I've been considering this one tho

nothing should be wrong with it, s*** i ran a k&n filter to the stock intake tube with the MAF still attached and nothing went wrong. just didn't have a good spot to locate it since the stock tube'n is rubber, it flop'd around like a dead fish so i wedge'd it into the front intake and removed the big air box and set it in there. but since i got an injen intake which i like and it does mount the way its suppose to and it just looks better. if its sound your look'n for it'll be muffled since its under the hood, you won't hear it during highway travel. i hear my injen intake all the time, at 15 and at 80, gives me a woody. believe it or not, but you engine bay gets dirty quick. so you're probably gonna have to clean it more often than most cold air intakes hidden behind the bumper. other than that can't beat $30...

well with the header and filter i can really feel a difference.and the muffler i would get it if its cheaper then get it done at a muffler shop.

well with all this, you convinced me to get a cheap sri from ebay and possibly buy a different filter for it. Im most likely going to get that exhaust also! Will i need to get my car tuned if i were to put these on? Or do i only need to get my car tuned if i have a turbo...

Nah, there's nothing really to tune. Those add-ons won't do much for the performance. The intake will make it sound better. Just make sure you get the MAF mounted right, with any luck at least it won't lower your performance and it'll look cool.

thanks, since i can't find a deal on any exhaust, saving is my only option.
I've found a couple different exhaust's that im considering, OBX ($300), Megan Racing ($345), and HKS ($325ish)... do you guys have any preference? Magnaflow is way too expensive and the mazdaspeed i hear drones...

I installed it today. It just barely clears the master cylinder and I put the MAF between the two tubes. The only thing is the filter wants to occupy the same space as the coolant reservoir. I took the bracket off and found a screw hole that allowed me to move it catty-cornered next to the battery. I just need to get some tube for the overflow or it's going to spew on the MAF wiring and plug. That would suck.

The only thing I have left is to secure it. I rigged it temporarily with some wire for tonight. I'll figure that out tomorrow. The kit came with 2 brackets, one flat and about 7" with 3 holes drilled in it. The other is a short L with one hole. I can't see where they'll help, and there was no mention in the instructions. They were a joke, but I don't mind figuring things like that out. I'll search pictures and see what others do about it. I'll take suggestions if any of you have tips for securing it, or re-locating the coolant reservoir.
