Thinking it's time to move on...

So the p5 is now almost 8 years old. Hard to believe. At 39,000 miles, the paint is still shiny and looks new. Just a couple door dings, a couple rust spots under the front doors and under the hood. It's running fine, and treats me nicely.

The question is... do I move on?

If I were to, it would be into a 09 or 10 Mazda 3 hatch. I have to say I'm not overly satisfied with either the 09 or 10. Sure, there's a tremendous horsepower bump on either one, and the interior is classier. Increased cargo capacity is nice as well. But gas mileage goes down slightly, and I'm not a fan of the exterior of either...

The main reason I'm thinking about this is because I'm guessing in a year or two, something might break and cost 1k or so to fix. Meanwhile, the car depreciates another 1k or so...

So torn! What do y'all think?

I'm sure the car is paid off by now. lol However if your that worried about it breaking down drop the amount that would go towards a new car note a month in savings each month and your set if something breaks. However at that mileage I seriously doubt something will break costing that much.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the car will hold up in a year or two. The car's paid off (actually, the dealer wrote me a check for 1,299 when I bought it). I guess I'm kinda getting tired of the car, but kinda not at the same time...

It does sound like you want a new car. It might be the fact that you see everyone else getting new cars and want one to. Hell just chunk the extra savings into and either save for a rainy day or mod the hell out of it an enjoy it!

Personally, I will keep my protege until it rusts into nothing. I can't think of any car I would rather have (under $40k that is).

It sounds like you are tired of it though, so maybe it is time for you to get something else.

^^im in the same boat

with the car paid off, no point is trading it and make payments again, plus i know the car so well it'd be a shame lose that

drive it until the wheels fall off< buy new ones, and keep driving

turbo it? lol

Automatic = Failure

Maybe. I think it's more because right now I can easily choose between 09 or 10, but in a couple years, I'm stuck w/the new body style unless I go used...

But at the same time, like you guys are pointing out, the 3rd gen protege is such a special car...

lordzath's buddy just bought a new car on Saturday. I think he is getting an itchy trigger finger himself.

haha it's true that like everyone around me is buying a new car so maybe I'm getting the bug, too.

No way am I doing a conversion! I'd rather turbo it and go out in a blaze of automatic glory.

i wish i could look for another car after 39k miles haha. If you do go buy another car more power to ya, but it would be safer to save up the money buy something in a year or two or four.

You do realise you can get a cheap built auto a little cheaper then getting a auto just rebuilt for the pro and the built one hold a hell of a lot more power! I'd still turbo it! Throw a good sized tranny cooler on it and a shift kit and turbo the b****! I some times wish i would of done that with my old p5 instead of getting my MSP. I really liked the old p5 to! Don't get me wrong I really like my MSP to.

In these economic times? Keep the car, pocket the $500-700 a month in payment and increased insurance. That's $7200 a year. 3 years from now, pay cash for a used MS3, and laugh at your friends who's car note is half their rent amount, struggling to get by.
