Theft and the Mazdaspeed?

Hi,

I've been a Honda guy for a long time, but my 99 SIR was just stolen and I'm tired of being paranoid about my car. So no more Honda for me. Anyways, I was looking at the Mazdaspeed as a replacement. I know its an awesome performer, but I'd like to know how popular it is with car thieves? Is there an immobilizer on the car? I don't want to buy another nice car just to have it stolen again and unfortunately, moving out of this ratty neighbourhood isn't an option.

Thanks!!

I don't think there's been a problem with MSP's being stolen at any kind of high rate. Hondas are much more likely to be stolen. It does not have an immobilizer, though and has a pretty low rent security system, so it wouldn't be hard to steal if someone wanted to.

Focus SVT has an immobilizer, that would be a harder car to steal and is a blast to drive- my wife has one.

I have only heard of one being stolen. Honda's get stolen and chopped up, but there is not a big market for protege parts so it is less likely to be stolen. Maybe broken into but thats a given with any nice car.

My point exactly.

yeh and didn't the guy only steal the radio then burn the car or something like that?

Are parts are very interchangable like Honda's? Can I get a Mazdaspeed engine and drop it into a regular Protege?

Does the MSP have an immobilizer?

Thanks everyone! I'm going to view 2 MSP's this weekend! :D

Y would u get a mazdaspeed engine and drop it into a protege??? u lose all the suspension characters?

SIR? Canadian here?

*mumbles* .... just get a P5 and just turbo the hell out of it ... *ducks out of the mspeed section*

If you find a used spicy that would be a vandalism magnet. As might a yellow 3.5. Any car you own there will always be the risk of theft. Why not just get a high quality alarm with an immobilizer, remote/pager, and anything else you want to protect and include it in your loan to take the one time brunt of the cost off your back? Get what car you want and get an alarm that will be worthwhile installing.

Oops, I just found out that the MSP engine is the same as the regular 2.0 Protege engine. :) Lots to learn. I figured it'd be running different internals because of the boost.

I'm very Canadian eh! :D

Oh, I'd be installing a good alarm, but you're right about the vandalism. I never thought about that. I was looking at a spicy orange car too. :(

Annnnddd.. I was reading on the Grassroots Motorsports web page about problems with the MSP differential and that is was fixed in the later version of the MSP. How do I know I'm getting one of these newer cars?
