The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

You should really try coffee, Evan. Its a good subsitute for crack! ;)

There is no substitute for crack! And as my dealer, do you really want to try something else? It's your business, man... haha

And a friendly reminder, if anyone wants to come to an Auto-X there is one this Sunday (11th) at Lakeland Community College. It's very laid back and so far only 14 entrees. $40 will get you at least 4 runs (we had 3 test/tune runs and 4 times runs last time). Marc, Will, Pablo, Patrick and I will be there too.

^50 miles without any prep!? You're crazy!!!

It's not too bad, it's pretty flat with the exception of about 3 tough hills. The harderst part of the whole event is the fundraising.

I'm hopefully going to make it to this. Just gotta bleed my brakes, change my oil, and set my rear sway bar to the stiffest setting.

90% sure I'm not going to be there. :(

The video does state that but Ohio does not currently have any legislature one way or another. Trust me on this one ;)

Some of this in information from the video-

The US DOT actually did a study regarding splitting lanes in cali vs. not splitting in texas & florida. It showed that riders were less likely to be involved in a collision if they were able to split lanes. Rider deaths due to rear end collisions are also 30% less.

As far as collisions due to lane splitting... most bikes are only as wide as the riders shoulders at most. If you can't judge the space that you would need to walk through then you likely have other issues. I prefer a minimum of 2 bike widths which is around 3 feet of width to lane split.

Keep this in mind, 2/3'rds of all motorcycle involved collisions are caused by a non-motorcycle vehicle. The most common of those collisions is a rear end collision.

If you're sitting still and a car comes up behind you, as a rider you have no control at all unless you're able to split lanes and move to the front of the stopped traffic.

+1mil.
And people would be surprised how many times I got almost ran over on purpose by people that don't think bikes should be able to lane split. Mostly vans and trucks. It's a f*ckin war out there when you are on a bike.

I must have never had those problems because I never was keeping with the flow of traffic. If I don't like being around people in a car, imagine me on a bike hahaha

I think they go hand in hand. If I am stuck in traffic in a car why is it okay for a bike to go down the middle and miss all the fun. I wouldn't dream of sharing a lane with a bike while I'm in a car. There is a reason why lines are painted on the road. 2 wheels or 4 the rules of the road should be the same. Ride defensively and always have an escape route in case of trouble. There are always going to be blind asswipes that cut you off and stuff nothing you can do about that.

Think about it this way, if a bike moves to lane split, thats one more space you can move up & you'll reach your destination that much faster. One less car thats stuck in the traffic with you. Now imagine if you're in an area that has a large population of bikes in a high traffic area.

If you're parked at a dead stop behind another car what is you're escape route supposed to be if a car rearends you?

Keep this in mind, another study in that video also mentioned that if just 10% of a population were to switch from cars to bikes, 40% of traffic congestion would disappear.

Also keep in mind that most countries outside of the US including the majority of european countries allow the practice of lane splitting, otherwise known as "filtering".

Another side effect is most bikes don't have any form of climate control so splitting can be nice on those 80*+ days, 15mph of airflow can make a heck of a difference.

Thus proving Darwin correct...

or is that not what the study is saying?

Driving back from the pick-n-pull a couple days ago (and again today...) some douche on a harley was stuck in traffic next to me:
He's over in the right lane swerving around because he's in downtown columbus on High Street (right in front of the courthouse) and who would have guessed, there's a bunch of traffic and a bunch of city bus...s.... over there. He's gettin' pissed, so he chooses to ride literally inches from the car in front of him's (an old lady driving a mercedes) bumper. I'm pretty sure she stopped at some point and he hit her lightly, but she just kept going and he kept up right behind her. Meanwhile, i lol'd.

Lane splitting? I haz no idea... is that when i'm like sitting there and someone who i assume is a big douche on a bike rides between the lanes up to the head of the line? I assume that guy's a d-bag, but it probably sucks worse for him to sit in traffic with some guy inching up behind him. I always try to stay real' far back form bikers, then i point it out when i see someone creeping up on the back of a bike in traffic. I assume the creeper is a douche... but then i've also assume the biker is a douche too?
...oh my god, I'm a douche also.

I just don't care much for the old guys with all the leather and the harleys... once i was cruisin' around out by new lexington back in the day (i had a the day, once) in the elantra, when 4 bikers showed up behind me. I get super freaked out when anyone's behind me... or next to me... (but not in front of me) but they're going faster than me, so two of them pass me while the other two stay back. The other two are waiting for the chance to pass, but then i see my opportunity to do something... stupid. I speed up a bit, not enough to catch up to the other two guys, but fast enough to make it too hard for the other guys behind me to pass me. Their two buddies drive off and get further away, and the two behind me make a sort of sad face :'( Ya know, they probably didn't make a sad face, but the way i remember it they were sad and that's how i'd like to remember it.
Okay then i slowed down/got over so they could go around me... good times, good times...
