The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Depending on the traffic maybe the rider could have left more room. Does that even make sense?

That's true. I don't know the situation, but every time a rider is an idiot and swerves in front of me, I tend to back off just in case.

On another note. Jen has sunday off and we were thinking we could all get together. Thoughts? Maybe not include superfly.

Why in the world would you brake check someone on a bike?

They have a large desire to die painfully?

Other than its Monday, how is everyone's morning? Ignoring the fact that my "to-do" list both at work and at home are way too long, its been a quiet morning so far. *knocking on wood*

Some motorcyclists are just asking for it though. I mean the ones that are weaving in and out in traffic, using the shoulder and all other available pavement. Seemingly ignoring everthing else on the road. Riders have to be more defensive than they tend to be.

So true. I had two crotch rockets split about 10 cars at a stoplight, then go full throttle through a 40 zone on Saturday.

This day is going to suck.... I have no desire to do anything here at work because I have a 2 mile long list of crap to do around the house. Made all of my calls already so now I just have to try and drum up some business. Or I could just screw around on here & MSF. Maybe look for a new car on Cars.com or something. Gotta love these 13hr days.

Splitting lanes is technically not illegal in Ohio. I will admit I sometimes split lanes but I generally do so by the comifornia laws of no more than 15mph speed differential while not breaking the speed limit. I really think Ohio needs to implement lane splitting laws.

Heres a fairly good video of why it should be legal.

Wait, we weren't talking about brake checking a bike lol.

No, I wasn't. That would be the last thing to do. Evan's post could be taken both ways but I think he meant the rider brake checking someone. Thats how I took it at least.

I didn't watch all of that video but why would that ever be a good idea? Might as well use the sidewalk too.

Sorry, I was skimming. But I thought you guys said the biker brake checked that Pacifica and that's why his bike was stuck in the grill. Never mind. Just ignore me. It's monday morning and I don't drink coffee so it takes me longer to wake up. :)

ps- I'm always down for a meet, Larry.

They do make a few decent points, but they are professional riders who know how to ride properly and safely. There's a lot of people who don't understand the rules and how to do things like splitting lanes properly. I see it all the time. Besides, I don't want to loose a mirror or have a handle scratch down the side of my car because they couldn't judge the gap properly.

And that video said it's illegal in all states but Cali.

Had a garage sale at my mom's house, got rid of some stuff and made some money. Still alot stuff left so I think I'm going to see about an estate auction for what's left. Plan on getting one if not both cars towed over to my house by the end of the week and my Pelotonia bike ride is this weekend. I haven't been on the bike at all this year so the 50 miles are probably going to kill me.

The video does state that but Ohio does not currently have any legislature one way or another. Trust me on this one ;)

Some of this in information from the video-

The US DOT actually did a study regarding splitting lanes in cali vs. not splitting in texas & florida. It showed that riders were less likely to be involved in a collision if they were able to split lanes. Rider deaths due to rear end collisions are also 30% less.

As far as collisions due to lane splitting... most bikes are only as wide as the riders shoulders at most. If you can't judge the space that you would need to walk through then you likely have other issues. I prefer a minimum of 2 bike widths which is around 3 feet of width to lane split.

Keep this in mind, 2/3'rds of all motorcycle involved collisions are caused by a non-motorcycle vehicle. The most common of those collisions is a rear end collision.

If you're sitting still and a car comes up behind you, as a rider you have no control at all unless you're able to split lanes and move to the front of the stopped traffic.
