The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Wow, thanks for the offer! Really starting to believe in the Mazda Family.

On another topic, I was wondering. For custom gear ratios (say combining a set of gears from compatible transmissions with different ratios), would it have a better effect on mpg to have short acceleration gears (1-2-3) to get the car up to speed quickly, or have longer ratios to keep the revs lower.

I'm starting to think that I want to become an engineer. I can see this issue both ways. When i was playing around with the temp sensor in my Miata, I noticed that under hood temps increased more depending on throttle position/load than rpms, so I'm [completely] guessing that fuel consumption reacts in a similar manner. My buddy and I have talked about it a little, as he's learned from guys he knows reporting their observed mpg in their trucks. And contrary to what is common sense, sometimes the bigger engines get better mileage (I'm unsure about gearing differences), because they are under less stress. A four cylinder engine in a 3/4 ton truck with a huge cab, long bed, and 4x4 is always going to be straining, especially if there's any extra weight added in. The bigger engine can end up getting better mileage because I think it powers the truck more efficiently (engine under less load).

The point of all this is I was wondering about a custom collection of gears for my [hopeful] KL swap. I know on 626.net, a lot of the guys with the KL report the same mileage that I'm getting with my FS, which is high 20's around town and low-mid 30's on the highway. The Probes on the other hand get like 22 best case, doesn't matter if you flog it or drive like grandma going to the grocery.

The Probes have shorter/more aggressive gearing, which I think would allow the engine to get the car up to speed quicker, with less load on the engine, but at the cost of higher revs. I'm wondering how much of it boils down to the fact that Probeowners think they have a "sports car." The bit that goes against that is that they said they get that mileage regardless of driving style.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I'd like to get the best of both worlds, with the short gearing for the bottom gears, yet taller at the top, to save some gas for the few times that I do go on the highway.

Well... the biggest thing is chosing gear ratios that put the cruising speed somewhere near the peak torque point. Lower RPM cruising speed can cause the car to lug when going up a hill, making you waste more fuel as it's demanding more. I would think that unless you're running crazy power, or you've effectively shifted the torque curve in some way, the stock ratios would still be ideal.

A lot of it comes to driving styles too. For example, I get higher mileage in my Protege than most people I know. I usually pull off around 31 or 32 mpg.

Evan #2, did Leipolds treat you well? Nice looking shift knob too. I've got the same one but the smaller version, that's why they call me "Lady Hands.". Haha. ps- there's no need to turn your rotors if you're not getting any vibes when you apply the brakes. They'll be fine, no worries.

Leipolds treated me very professionally. No complaints! I was very happy that they actually installed the correct tires on the correct wheels. I put a piece of blue tape on the 2 tires that are basically brand new. I told them I need those two on a left and right wheel, so I can put them on my front. I was very happy they did it right and used stick-on weights like I asked.

The EBC Yellow Stuff require 3 high speed stops from 60-5. When I did my brakes in the Mazda6, it was snowing A LOT. So the bedding process didn't exactly go as planned because stopping from 60-5 in the snow was impossible without ABS kicking in. Somehow, it still worked and I never had any issues with the pads. I'm going to make sure this time I install them while the roads are clear lol.

Also, I have to post this quote. I was PMing Marlon about the TWM shift knob and here is one of his responses,"It has a great feel and I know you will love it once you put it in your hands."

LMAO I couldn't let that one slide Marlon! Thanks for the great feeling shift knob!!!

Right, that's a good point about the powerband. I'm not sure where my band would be, I would need a dyno run to get things sorted out. I plan to have a decent N/A build, I'm hoping for around 200whp, and still be able to pass emissions. From what I've read so far, that shouldn't be too much of a pipe dream. Also, one of the concerns is that the PGT gears aren't the strongest, and some guys blow them up on nitrous or boost, so apparently the gears from the Escort are a much stronger replacement.

I'm not concerned about a low cruising speed and having to shift to go up hills. The Miata is almost that way because of the peaky powerband.

Thanks for the response. This probably wasn't the best section, but I'm most familiar with all of you guys, so I did it anyway. More research is necessary!

I am reminded again every winter why I am so satisfied with my mom's choice of a Prius. I mean it's undeniably adept in the snow, and always gets out of our driveway first try..

I hate cars! More specifically, any car on the road. People are retarded!! We live in Ohio...we get snow EVERY year. Why do people act like this is the first time they've ever seen or driven in snow????????

It took me 1.5 hours to get to work, normally a 30 minute drive. Everyone was driving like old grandmas, when 77 was lightly dusted with snow. Once it was 3 lanes though, I was tearing it up passing people left and right....going 60mph LOL

It will probably affect me more this year than any other year now having 4wd. Before I was just confident in my car, tires, and my driving ability so handled the roads just fine. Now I will be affected by very little to slow me down.. well at least slow me down to a crawl like most people drive in the snow.

yeah its funny being able to do the speed limit when there is snow on the ground and you have some nice new snow tires haha

even better when you blowing by suv's and awd/4x4/4wd vehicles hahah

looks like im going to have to run home over lunch and get my tires mounted on my wheels and hopefully throw them on the car tonight haha

dude phen you gotta talk to someone about all these stupid double posts... its REALLY starting to get incredibly annoying, i hit post and wait and then i get double posts... i mean i know how to delete it but its still annoying having to go back and delete the double post everytime you post something on this forum

+1

I just recently noticed the double posting today. Seems like when it takes forever to post, it will just double post.

i didn't get my winter wheels on, and it's cold out.

I definitely post less now just because of the hassle involved with double posting.

yeah, i kinda feel that way too chipmunk haha

im gonna get the new snow tires mounted on my wheels and then mount the wheels on the car today, ill probably try to get em back off the car this weekend to hit em with purple paint haha so then ill post the pics of the winter setup after the purple paint :)

it is being discussed. us mods arent in control of such things. we try to let the admins know. it did get better for a while, but now seems to be getting worse.

it also seems to be worse during peak traffic hours.

Just remember... you may be able to get going... but you're gonna need to stop sometime. Ice don't care if you have 4x4. ;)

Yeah... imagine if you had to deal with the slow internet that I'm dealing with. Takes 3-4 minutes for me to delete a double.

So... I'm thinking of bright blue for the winters. Thoughts?

I guess I'll bother the folks here since most of you all know me.

It was awesome to have Marlon and Lauri here this weekend at my new place. Meeting up with Tom Long and Eric Meyer was a blast! Showing Tom how a heavier shifter knob can be a difference in shifting as well as having Eric ride in my car on the way to dinner will be completely memorable.

So any of you Team Ohio people are more than welcome to crash at my place if you plan on doing stuff at Road Atlanta. I'm about 30 mins from the track.

Chris thanks for the hospitality, we appreciate all you did for us. We had a great time, great racing, great friends and great food and drink too! Well, we get our first set of Toyo 888's from (stickers) from Eri, I think we have another 7-8 sets to pick up from his Indy shop. Eric also put the TWM Desert Eagle in his RX-8 and loved how it felt and he is going to do a review on it in the next couple of days. Also, spoke with tom & Glenn Long, they re putting the TWM Full Replacement Kit in the #27 Speed 3, along with a Knob fo rthe PIR show in Orlando later this week. Can't wait to get the feedback from Tom and Eric Armss, the Manager for their Grand-Am program. All of the MAzdaspeed bigwigs will be there as well!
