The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

We've had the Protege tested twice and passed both times as the main cat catches all of the s*** anyway........hell even Fez's Christmas Tree passed as well. the wagon has carts as well as Lauri's hatch. I don't think you'll have any issues passing E check! We know people and we have all of the judges and politicians in our pockets- Don Corleone

Kewl. I am so jealous of you dudes with the cash for mods. I have to wait at least another 6 monts before I can do anything. I will be getting another pay raise when one of my girls graduates and my child support goes down.
Don't mind me I am just whinning out loud.

The MSP does not have a resonator or a secondary cat, it does have a 3" race muffler and the custom 3" turbo back exhaust. I think Phen as a similar set up in his MSM. Evan #2 you can run the car without the cat or a resonator, turbos's are not as loud as NA exhausts (due to back pressure in the NA cars). You will gain HP w/o the cat.

Correct, however my downpipe is only 2.5". Previous owner of the MSM was a moron when it came to exhaust systems... but that's neither here nor there. There is a such thing as too big of an exhaust on a turbo car, contrary to popular belief.

Oh, and I've heard many things from people who have played Forza games, and and have played GT5. They all say that there's nothing like forcing out a "half finished" game (not all of the cars take damage like they do on Forza) with a bad AI, and a physics engine that hasn't been upgraded since GT3. When I played Prologue, I was forced to agree with their thoughts. I haven't played 5 yet (obviously) but I have a fear based on everything that I've read. It's usually the Gran Turismo fanbois (of which I used to be one) who will say "Yeah, it's got problems, but it's still the best sim out there!" Um...no... the problems brought to the surface kinda make it sound like it sucks ass...

We'll see when I get home.

About the exhaust mod discussion, I learned the hard way with mine. I already had a header, and went to Budget Muffler (first mistake) and told them I wanted 2.25" piping from the cat back and to put in the oval (non-bling) Magnaflow muffler I had. The retard there called it a fart can, which it obviously isn't. They took out the resonator after the cat (without asking), which made the car sound like absolute ass. It sounded so bad I felt physically ill driving home with it in that state. The muffler was ~80$ from Summit, 120$ for custom piping and labor, and then another 40-50$ for the resonator that they had to put back in. It sounds 100x better with the resonator.

Now, with that said, if I had an MS3, I'd delete the resonators, because it sounds like this:

The turbo acts like a muffler, so the MS3 will naturally be quieter, and not raspy. Plus without the resonators, it sounds like a Subie flat 4, and I think that's a big plus. Go for it!

I've got my application for LMS lead welder/fabricator right hurr. I got discouraged early on in my welding class, but I made this stuff tonight at my 4th class. The hardest part is still trying to see what you're doing through the super dark helmet. Not all of the welds look the same, I was still playing with the heat settings and wire speed. They're pretty solid, though, so that's what matters, I think. The stuff also looks bad because I didn't clean them up, so you can actually see the welds.

Yup, it's MIG specifically. The class covers MIG and oxy-acetylene for brass and fusion, and supposedly hammer welding, but we haven't done that yet. I wish TIG was covered, too, but from what I hear it's pretty difficult. Tonight we made up patches and made a whole new bottom 9" for a door skin. It came out really nice, but I didn't have my camera with me. It's amazing the results you can get if you hit the metal enough with a hammer..

Welding is a tough art. I worked in a fab shop for several years and learned all the equipment (lathe, TIG/MIG welders, end mills...) It was alot of fun to be able to take a hunk of metal and make it into something.

Didn't know you smoked E-Lew! Why else would you need one of those things?

Evan #2, I guess a test pipe (straight pipe, race pipe, I think it is all the same) is actually the way to go. Pablo can probably tell you more, but a test pipe bolts right into place and deletes both the cat and one resonator. It should also add about 8-10 HP due to no cat restriction. If it indeed deletes the resonator as well, then you just have one--cut that one out and you are good to go. All for well under 200 bucks!

Let me know if I am wrong, because I am not 100% sure.

Ya I think I like the Test Pipe. I just don't want to mess with the downpipe at all, because I've read people over boost like a mofo. I want to do as much as I can, without having to look into a tuning solution.

Reading more about the Test Pipe, it looks like it just replaces the 2nd Cat. So I shouldn't have any issues passing emissions.

Now this is where it gets fuzzy: about the cats and E-Check. I heard that if you delete both cats you won't pass E-check. But Marlon didn't you say none of your cars have cats and they all passed because they are OBD2 and just hooked up the code reader?

I've had 2 Civics and my P5 all pass E-check over the last 10 years and no one has ever used the mirror to see if I had my cat. I DID have a cat in each car and the OBD1 Civic had a sniffer test. But I wouldn't worry too much about the visual inspection. And my Civics and P5 were/are bloody loud.

Just gotta make sure you do plenty of research and buy the parts you will be happy with for a few years because as you know, exhaust bolts never like to come apart easily. :)

ps- Evan, your car is louder than you think. Everytime you come over I can hear you down the street and I always ask "Is that the stock exhaust?". Have one of your friends drive your car up and down the street and you can hear what it sounds like outside the car. It sounds good, mate.

Yes I do need to hear the car from the outside. Also, we should compare my car to Chippy's car and see if I'm louder than stock. I doubt the previous owner did anything to it. The car only had 10k miles when I got it. I took a quick look and didn't really see anything different.

Now where would one find a friend that can drive it up and down the street?

Ya that video is one of the main causes for my interest :) Love that sound!

I've heard my car in person--it sounds really good, just a tiny bit too quiet! And that youtube video is of a 24/7 member of the same username, so you can hit hiim up for more info, I'm sure-he seems cool.

Go test pipe, they can be bought new for what, 150, used for 100 or less

Oooh! Ooooh! Pick me! :)

Wes, those welds are pretty rough, buddy. But not bad for only your 2nd time welding. Like Chris said, it's an art and is a lot harder than it looks. But a trade that is epically awesome. Now buy yourself a welder, I want a cage and custom exhaust for the P5. Muahaha!

I've decided I want the Test Pipe :)

Now I just gotta figure out which one I want.

Street Unit Test Pipe = $200
ATP Test Pipe (from Protege Garage) = $180
Corksport Test Pipe = $150

Are there any others out there? Which do you guys think would be the best? They all seem good, but I like the price of the Corksport best :)

Corksport. Make sure you get the right exhaust flange. I really like Corksport's line of products-high quality and just a hair cheaper than the competition! I'm getting jealous, and want to hear it! This may be better sounding than cutting out the resonators, or it can provide even better sound!

+2 for CorkSport. I love their products but I'm just basing my oppinion on the companies, not the products since I have not heard any of them in person or know how bad/good the installs were. SU seem to treat their customers quite well judging from Pablo and Marlons experience. Stay the hell away from PG. I can't believe they haven't been banned here yet...

If you need to install it LMS is always open. ;)

I love my Corksport SRI + TIP!! It was definitely a quality product, for a low price! I'll probably end up with the Corksport Test Pipe then, assuming nothing bad comes up in my research :)

Also, I just dropped off my ms3 wheels and winter tires at Leipold Tire to be mounted :)

Evan #1: You can drive my car for some fly-by's.

how about someone who knows the car, we can test your rev limiter while we're at it... LOL

+1 on CorkSport, I'm also very happy with my SRI

LOL...I haven't tested the rev limiter yet, I should make sure it's there.

I think Pablo would be a good candidate for part of the fly-bys he can let you know what it sounds like in the farthest upper reaches of the revs. All of this exhaust talk makes me wish even more that my car was not an automatic, just about everything sounds like crap with an auto trans. Maybe a cat and res delete with stock muffler at least it would flow better.
