The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

no charge for watching or riding along

No charge? AWW YEAH

There is only a charge for clean up after you poop your pants in someone elses car :)

A couple more questions- How would I go about getting to ride in someones car? Ask nicely?

Also, does anyone in NE ohio have any where to practice/learn autocross skills? Or, rather, racing skills in general? The only school or course I can seem to find on the matter is "The Mid-Ohio School". I'd be fine with informal learning, or even self-taught if anyone has a location where practicing is viable.

Last up- anyone know how a 2008 Mazda6 is going to fair for handling in something like autocross? All I really have to go on is TopGear's S01E01- which is rather outdated these days.

I appreciate the help so far guys! Thanks!

EDIT: Figured I'd mention it now...if anyone would prefer me posting elsewhere, just let me know where. :)

The 6 will be OK, not awesome but still a decent platform. Is it a V6 or 4 banger? I know a guy who use to autox a 6 and he liked it, has moved on to a miata since but used the 6 for a couple of years

When you get to Geauga Lake, look for us and introduce yourself, a black Protege 5, silver miata, white speed3, we'll be parked together. You can borrow a helmet and go for a ride, and if you want to ride in a Vette or the Tesla then just ask nicely

It's an inline 4-cylinder 2.3L. I've got motorcycle helmet from past adventures, so I'm set there. Really, I'd just like to take a look around. Me and my girlfriend will be there Sunday, I'll make sure to look out for those cars being parked together. Thanks again!

Yep. Generally autocrossers are a friendly bunch. Go up to the people who look like they're in charge, introduce yourself as a noob, and they'll likely point out people who'll be more amenable. General rule? Just don't ask to ride on someone's final run of the day ;)

I can't speak for Ohio's autocross programs, but most regions have some form of novice program for regular events, and / or a stand-alone novice school at some point during the season. I would strongly recommend against throwing a handful of cones in some random parking lot and hooning around. Property owners and the local fuzz tend to frown on that. Stick to sanctioned events.

Here's a good place to find some more information:

NORA has a rookies program where an experienced driver will lend a hand for the entire event. They're a good group, is you car stock? As you might as well know where you belong.

Yeah, its currently stock. I plan on working a bit on it in the next couple of months, though. I do have a question about the NORA rookies program- I've checked their website a few times and I don't see anything about it. Is this something I should be calling about?

On a tiny side note- do any of you know any of the club officers for NORA? I'm a web designer/developer myself with quite a bit of spare time that I could put towards something. I'm curious to see if they'd exchange a bit of design or web work for some instruction. I've got a large portfolio they could take a look at. Just a thought.

Thanks!

The regular cost of the autox covers instruction, so there's no need to go the extra mile. We also provide guidance when we're there, so you should be all set.

I'll wear my ugly yellow tie-dye Team Sahlens t-shirt so you'll be able to spot me, new guy. My name is Evan. :)

Lol, nice, thanks. I'm Mike- I'll be easy to spot, especially considering I'm the new guy. Quite a huge beard, I'm 6'5 and my girlfriend who'll be there with me is like 5 foot, tops.

Hi Mike! (hi)

When were the 6's redesigned? If 2008 is still the old design I'd say go with it but it'll still be a boat. If it's the new design I'd say look for something else.

Heck everything is a boat now-a-days. What happened to all the little cars? I miss my CRX and EG. Heck, even my EK was small.
