The Ohio Auto-X and Track Event chat thread

I will be smf but you should run in the same heat. And to Evan I just saw that so I will at least have some company when it counts and some experience to tell me what I'm doing wrong. Anyone know of some videos I should study on how to drive before I go?

Any that Bill Brees has on youtube.

I use 25, so you can pick yours

Will. #19 What class will I be in my mods are CAI, header, larger brakes, Front lip/splitter, motor mounts.

We are talking about the Protege 5 right? That would be in STC with those mods and you'd be going against Civic Sis from the 80s. Only the turbo Mazdas (MS3, MS6, MSP) are in STX.

Street Touring - Appendix A (on page 182).

Mazda
323, 323 GT, & 323 GTX
Protg (NOC) (1999-2003)
Protg MP3

And who out of our group will I run with/against? Wait STX that's like everyone right?

No one around here fits into the STC category.

Not necessarily. You are only guaranteed to run in the same heat as cars in the same class as you, not similar classes. This past weekend I was in STS in heat 1 with STX in heat 5.

+1 to this.

Also, it's kind of expensive and requires some hardware investment, but cheap seat time is available via www.iracing.com. It's obviously no substitute to actual seat time via autocross or real track time but I play it non-stop in the winter. I also used it to learn Watkins Glen and VIR before I actually went there in real life. With Watkins Glen in particular it felt like I had driven it before hundreds of times and already had a real good idea as far as the braking points that I wanted to use.

Yep, that definitely falls into the Protege (NOC) (1999-2003) category.

NOC = Not otherwise classified.

But really you can run in any class you'd like other than stock, if you don't care about being competitive and would prefer to run with other Mazda peeps.

I totally forgot about stc being for non turbo. Don't listen to me Larrry. Will is da man. You can run in SMF too if you want to as well. Just depends if you are out there for fun or being competitive. Either way you'll still have fun.

I would rather be in with the rest of the group I think. That way we are all doing the same thing, running, working the track, shooting the breeze, etc. However if I am on my own I could ride along or have someone ride along with me. Hmm, not sure what to do now.

I know this is auto-x but some people should sign up for the Mid Ohio track day on September 2nd. As of right now I think I'm going to be the only Mazda person there that I know. http://autointerests.com/events/459
There is the link. Sign up people and have fun.

I will be there, Patrick and as others have said check out Bill Brees's videos. Also try and find videos of FWD cars, as the line is somewhat different for what we drive.

I'm sure someone will me able to ride with you if you go into SMF. There is almost always someone knowledgable that runs in a different heat. Marc, Will, Phen, and Pablo are in different classes. If not I have some helpful friends that would be able to guide you Larry if you want some pointers.

I agree finding someone to help is not an issue at all.

If I were you I'd run SMF. This way you can BS with Patrick, Corey, and AJ (if he ever comes out) in between runs. Your car isn't going to me competitive in either class so I wouldn't choose based on that reason.

Just my $0.02 though.

Oh, and I can modify your numbers if you decide to switch classes at a later date.

Usually SM and SSM run at the same time too. Plus depending on where the co-driver split is you might be able to ride with someone else or have someone ride with you.

Larry, Lauri more than likely will not be running and she can help you out by riding along, too. It is all up tp you......

Competitive Protege5. These do not go together do they? lol Hell I could care less about being competitive, I just wanna go fast. Well fast in a P5 I should say. I like your idea Will. SMF it is.

you will NOT be stx. you will be st or stf larry corey doesnt know what hes talking about

There is no "ST" class anymore so that's definitely not an option. Haha.

I stopped looking at all the ST classes when they introduced stc and then I went to SMF. Less restrictions to follow :)

Ok, AJ says don't listen to corey because he doesn't know what he is talking about, then he gives bad info. Will schools AJ. Will is the go-to guy. I got it. Lol!
