Mazda to launch SUV for U.S. market in 2006-paper

TOKYO, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Japan's Mazda Motor Corp (Tokyo:7261.T - News) plans to launch an upmarket sport utility vehicle (SUV) for the North American market in 2006, hoping to improve its profit margins there, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.
If true, it will be the first Mazda model to be designed specifically for the North American market. Mazda's strength lies in small cars and it has struggled in North America where larger cars are more popular.

The Nihon Keizai newspaper said Mazda, which is one-third owned by Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F - News), would aim for annual sales of 50,000 units.

The SUV would be based on Mazda's Atenza compact, use a 3,000cc to 3,500cc engine made by Ford and be priced between $30,000 to $40,000, the paper said.


Competition for the Odyssy, and the Sienna.

The Odyssey and Sienna are minivans....this is a large SUV

The SUV will not be built off of the Freestar or Mercury Montery, seeing as how that article clearly states it will be built of the Atenza (known as the 6 in America)

The 6 platform will probably also be used for a Lincoln Aviator replacement in the form of a sport SUV/crossover thing.

The Mazda 6 platform is going to be the base of a really Contour/Mystic replacement in fords model lineup. There will be a Lincoln model too so I've read.

Right the Ford Five Hundred and the Mercury Montego use the Mazda6 platform. While I'm not sure about the Lincoln model, I wouldn't doubt there will be a Mazda6 derivative. The 6 platform is supposed to be used for 10 different vehicle platforms.
