the handling of the p5

i think the .87 was MP3/MSP.. and the MP3 tested by car and driver went throught the slalom at 72mph which was 2nd fastest only to a lotus elise, and it beat everything from porches(sp?) to corvettes

Looks like the mazda replacement doesnt handle as well as the Mp5, from Road&Track:

The 3s's 65.2-mph slalom time compares favorably with the Porsche 911 Targa's, for example, but its skidpad result of 0.84g was nothing to write home about. Then again, handling is all about "feel," and the 3s does feel good while cornering. Granted, the 3s does feel a bit nose-heavy through sharp turns, but when driving at seven- to eight-tenths, the little Mazda is agile and reactive.

Its suspension MacPherson struts up front with four-point rubber mounting, and a multilink unit at rear, similar to the one used in the Mazda6 does a commendable job of keeping the car stable despite some body roll through sharp turns. and....

That said, the car's acceleration could definitely benefit from more zip; it managed only an 8.0-second run to 60 mph and a quarter-mile time of 16.3.

thats sounds about right for the mp3 but the msp pulls higher than .87...at least from articles i read. i remember the slalom test on the mp3...very impressive. can't wait til my p5 is that good.

actually it was a .79g maybe .87 or higher with suspension upgrades and tires.

when i was looking at a few p5's, i noticed that it came with a front sway bar right??
Yes it has a front sway bar. You however were probably thinking of a Front Strut Bar, which is what runs from one top of the strut to the other. Sway bars are at the bottom of the struts.

Also read here, the P5 is easily made to the MP3 specs(or better), just sway bars, springs, and struts.

cool article Mike.

oh... look at the ending paragraph (remember this article was June 2002):

"For the road or the track, the Mazda MP3 is an easy car to drive, and drive fast. Herta notes: "As soon as I exit the pit, right away I am at ease. There is no need for taking a lap or two to get used to the car. I would love to see this in a sport model fitted with a turbocharger and more damping control, and then see just how much quicker this car would be around the track. That would be a real ride."

I wonder if he ever tested a MSP.

The P5 handles well. If you drive it on the street in stock trim you can easily exploit it's handling for some real fun driving. The only weak point with the stock tires is it's low speed handling in which it needs more bite.

I took my then stock P5 to lapping sessions at the track and it did very well. The stock tires are it's weak point but that can be changed. Brakes are not bad. What I loved most was the ability to lift throttle oversteer. Wonderful handling!

yeah, what sucks is when i got my alingment done i think it had less negative camber than stock...when i lowered it the front right actually had 0 camber, and the left actually went a few degrees over spec positive...they could only get it back to like .7"(or was it .07, i dunno) negative on each side... i think it needs more(shrug)

if you get the eibach prokit, tokico hp struts and a larger rear sway bar, the car will handel like a dream. i just wish i had a tighter steering ratio for the hills
