The difference between MSP and Racing Beat springs. Pics.

Josh,

I hope your right, but customs may be on your side on this one. I've had things sit there for several days at least. Enjoy your trip..and please don't eat the dogs.

Damn, stereotype much? Sounds like you guys could benefit from some world travel! :) Never had any trouble with the water and never saw anyone eating dogs here, but anyway Korean food's so tasty, who cares what the ingredients are?

Hi Guys, Great Thread, just a little confused,

I have a SEDAN, Im installing MSP springs from a Sedan onto stock struts,

what will the rear look like? will it be too low? should the front coils be cut down? thanks

The MSP springs were designed to be used with MSP struts, whose spring perch is mounted differently than stock struts (and other Tokico struts). Therefore your sedan will sit lower in the rear than a stock MSP.

If you cut your front coils, the springs may not fit tight between their mounts, so if you go weightless over a rise or your front suspension is otherwise fully extended, the springs could pop out of their mounting location, which would be bad. This may be an issue in the rear also, using MSP springs on stock struts, but I don't know for sure.

You would be better off buying a different set of springs or getting the MSP struts, althought they're pretty steep at $460 (from onlinemazdaparts.com), to better complement the MSP springs you already have.

The MSP also has a different weight distribution than other sedans and P5s, so in that sense it's suspension is not optimized for other cars. Hope this helps.

Thanks for clarifying that up for me, do u know by how much the rear will be
lower than the front? is it dramatic, or just a little?

and does anyone have any pics of a regular sedan with stock struts with MSP springs, thanks

There's a photo of a Tokico Illumina rear strut next to an MSP rear strut in this thread. Stock struts and Tokico HPs and Illuminas all have the same spring perch location, so the photo indicates the difference in height for your case as well.

this is the picture:

don't focus on the overall strut body length, but look at the height of the spring perch fromt he floor. thats why when MSP springs are mounted on non-MSP struts the rear is too low. (MSP's have the rear too low anyway, and this exaggerates it)

I've always thought the sedan sat sorta like a stink bug anyway, with it's ass up too high. If you do The Washer Trick ( basically, add two #12 washers between that bowl shaped giant washer and the strut's 17mm top nut during reassembly) spring slop in the rear shouldn't be a problem. The car will still sit nice, slightly higher in back, as veiwed from the body side mouldings/lower sills. I did not know about the different spring seat heights, learn stuff new all the time !

Hey Thanks for the information, i havent taken the struts/springs out yet... but thats a great idea, it would change the height so no issues, just wondering if you have any pics or the washer trick??(drive2)

No pics, I think it is detailed in TheMan's Protege FAQ under suspension mods, scroll down, it's about "clunking." I don't think the washers affect the ride height at all, it just puts more load on the spring even at full droop. Regardless of all the MSP/MP3/RB/Tokico variables, I think any BJ Protege chassis owner can't go wrong with any of the struts/springs/swaybars in this category/thread. I just helped out a complete suspension buildup on a '91 Miata, and using Koni's and 97+ upper mounts requires all sorts of drilling out of washers etc. It's nice to really "bolt stuff on" like the Mazda goodies. :)

another trick to try is to fit a rubber o'ring onto the strut piston before you put the strut mount on

This is sort of on topic.

What is the difference between MP3 and regular Protege STRUTS? I may buy a used set, so I am wondering.

I searched; however, I was not able to find much discussion about this.

MP3 struts are valved more aggressively, have a reinforced rear endlink mounting tab, have a different (higher) rear spring perch location, and are blue.

Thanks! So the spring perch location is different, huh? (flame2)

That is what I needed to know.

So if you installed I MP3 strut on a P5 with a P5 spring would it change the ride height up or down or the rear of the car?

So basically if you have a MP3 and you replace the shocks with non-OEM units you will be giving up your spring perch positioning and will need to use different springs to avoid rear drop?
I guess what I really want to know is if there are any springs for the P5 that will drop it 1/2" even around with tokico HP's as the shock of choice?
