The big question of the day

Ok - as most of you know - I'm a slave to the dollar.

I just got a job offer. Mon-Wed Noon to 8pm, Sat & Sun 8am-8pm (= 48 hours)

This would be roughly 100 miles per day on my car (5 days a week)

I would get no vacation or sick time (well, no paid time), and no benefits unless I pay for them out of pocket.

I'm a consultant at this place (the above)on the weekends currently making 32/hr working the two 12 hour shifts. Currently I work during the week for 43k/annual. I have 3 weeks vacation/1 week sick/ 1 week personal, plus another week of Miscellaneous Approved days off. I have 401k setup currently (they contribute $.05 for every $100) which I could move to a Roth IRA or something similar.

Basically - I am currently making 85k. I love both jobs - each have their plus's and minus's. If I make the switch - I lose my scheduled paid vacation/sick/personal time - I gain 2 days off every week. Money stays about the same. Probably a little higher if I make the switch(extra hours when I can get them).

Now the risk factor. My main job might not pay much - but it's a steady reliable job. If I make this switch, I will be consulting full-time at one job. Right now I have my finances setup so that if I lose one job - I'm still ok. I party with the other half of my salary - lose one job - just tone down the party antics and cut a few of my extra bills and I'm ok. If I do this - and I lose the job, I'm ass out - then again I've been working a long time and unemployment would kick in. (**** THAT s*** - I WORK - I have no intentions of losing my job). There is always the chance that this larger company that wants to hire me goes public - in which case anything can happen.

Ugh, I'm pretty sure I want those two days off and the possibility of more money. Is it worth sacrificing my vacation/sick/personal days?

Input please!!!!

I think I would keep your current set up, you have vacation time, sick time, personel time, etc....Plus I assume you have health benefits which in this day and age are very very important. Have you seen how much a hospital stay costs??

I would stay where you are, to get 2 days off during the week but loose all the other benefits just doesnt make sense, thats my .02

Agreed stay with you current position, because when and if you get sick and if you even need surgery you will take a huge hit plus loosing all of those benefits if you switch. I would definitlly stay with you current setup.

that is a tough call. same money, 2 more days off per week soundslike a no-brainer, but the big issue is the job stability. good luck on whatever you choose.

quit both, rob a bank and move to Brazil.

or, just stay with your current set-up. the no benifits and no sick/vacation time is a big no-no

I'd stay with the current job(s). God knows everyone would like to have 2 more free days a week, and that's definatly something to consider, but it really depends on whether those 2 free days are worth paying for your own medical insurance and whatnot, not to mention the lack of sick days in case something happens where you need to cash in on the maedical insurance, lol.

I don't know, if the insurance is not too bad (I really have no idea what it would cost you) I would probably just take the new job, but that's mostly because I'm a slacker and would love the days off.

Yeah, the medical insurance is available from the consulting company. Right now I pay probably about 200-300/month because my main job picks up a part of it. With the consulting company my health insurance will cost about 600/month I am guessing. But for the raise, and the hours involved - I think I'm going to go for it.

The 6 weeks total vacation time is not as great as it sounds. I use the days one or two at a time to offset working 7 days a week.

6 weeks (5 day weeks) = 30 days off total
[not to mention the fact that the sick days get counted against me invariably in my performance reviews]

2 days off each week = 104 days off total

I really don't get sick too much. Haven't been to a doctor in roughly 12 years except for an annual checkup.

Damn that sounds high. I priced insurance for myself (30 y/o male) and I can get pretty good coverage on my own for about $200-$250 a month....which funny enough is about the same amount I currently pay for my employer's plan! So much for the big company discount.

But anyway, my opinion is still take the new job (104 days off a year!) and shop around for your own insurance.

EDIT - and it's not just the days off. Reality is you can ALWAYS find 2 jobs like you currently have that pay rather bad. Finding a job that pays 80k a year on the other hand is much tougher...and if I remember right you don't have a college degree? Hell even with a college degree finding a job for 80k is not easy. So take it.

Yep, no college degree. I got into IT back when that was the norm. Experience owns.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm going to do it. Just a matter of figuring out the bottom line on income. Those two days off are going to be a godsend. Not to mention being able to sleep in on weekdays since I won't have to be in until noon.

I'm making 85k right now, but working 7 days a week for it. I'm going to try to get my rate pushed up so that I come in at 89k, because as it looks right now my rate will keep me at 85k(but with the extra time off - I'm still happy). I'll get extra hours from time to time when projects run over, emergencies happen, and holiday hours. My goal is 100k/annual by the time I'm 30, and I'll be turning 28 next week (13th). Yep, I'm old.

bump for Christine

THE MILES ALONE ARENT GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME TO CHANGE JOBS. You should keep the current job, but knowing you, you will go where you think the money is and get those two extra days. But if it WERE ME, I'd want to keep something steady and reliable. But no one listens to me anyways.... meh.

damn right I don't listen to you - but I'm on the phone with you now - and I love looking at your ass in your sig.

Ghost's a ******* punk - hopefully he repents and if he's lucky you will take him back.

wut a suckup.. i'd go for stability and benefits... (imho

wow how many hours a week do you work during those 7 days? at least at $85K you're officially pimpin though! i'm not sure, but i think i'd lean towards staying. g'luck w/ whatever u end up doin'!

Mon-Fri 8am to 5pm at my main job
Sat-Sun 8am to 8pm at the other place

I'll be giving my two weeks at the main job on friday. I negotiated a rate that will get me roughly 88k on the scheduled hours. With the extra hours I always end up working (holidays and stuff - people call out - etc) I will likely finish up around 92k or 94k.

Thanks for the "pimp" comment.
