The Autocross Wheel Debate

I mulled over many of my options for a set of wheels. Since I am a nOOb at autoX, I decided to go with the best performing wheels for the money: Konig Helium 15s. (11.4lbs ea)

I did get the spline drive lugs too, just to be careful not to marr the new wheels.

What does everyone else use for autoX on their miatas?

still debating what to use myself...

Most people run 225/45-15 in stock classes. 225,235/45-13 for street prepared guys.

205/40-17would be stock for me.. I dunno what I want to do.. Going to street pepared and running the tires the rest of the guys run in stock class seems a bit retarded to me.

and I don't think 235/40-17 is gonne fit.

I run hollow spoked wheels from a later year Miata. 14 x 6 at only 10.8 LBS :D .

I reccomment the Ecsta V700s myself... plenty of stick, decent life, not as spendy as others..

So what would you guys run on a car with the larger brakes if you could run any size R-compound tire out there? (I'd have said 225/40,45-16, or 225/35 17 but no one makes either one)

well if I wanted to stay in stock class I'd stick with teh 205/40-17...

But I want a full exhaust and intake, which will throw me in Street prepared. There wheels & tires the sky is the limit.

Really 225?? how wide are their wheels??

Wait, how wide are the stock 10AE wheels, 6"? Anyone know off hand?

Oh, and I am going to have what's left of my 205/50/15 tires mounted on the Konigs.

oh, the 10AE wheels are 6" wide. i wonder how much wider I can go with a tire with the 6.5" Konigs? Anyone have a reference guide or link?

here ya go... this is a pic of one of teh local guys in his 10AE. He's the guy running the 225 Hoosiers on 15" OEM BBS wheels.

He's neck and neck with the S2000 guys in the stock class... Of course, he is an incredible driver too.

yeah, I dunno.... "fit" seems to be relative..

Accoring to the specs they're supposed to go 7-9" wheels. that's gonna require a bit of bribing to get the tire guy to do that :D

Here are my comments:

1) Depends on whether you want to run stock or street prepared. For street prepared, you want wheels as wide as possible. 13x8 and 13x9 wheels with 225 or 235 width tires are popular. For stock, you have to run the stock diameter and width. I think that the Heliums are 6.5" wide, so they're not legal. And in Kevin's case, the '94-97 wheels would only be legal on specific special editions from '90-93, since the standard wheels on those cars were only 5.5" wide. Your local competitors may let it slide.

2) For a long time, the only tire available in my size was the Kumho ECSTA V700. I think that they're pretty lousy. In their original (K8A, Victoracer rubber) form, they lasted about as long as Victoracers but didn't grip as well. They also developed a deep groove on the outer middle tread strip. When Kumho went to the softer compound which "required" shaving before use, the tires didn't last nearly as long -- about as long as Hoosiers! -- and still were only about even with Victoracers. They also hate being pinched onto a wheel that's too narrow. One of the Kumho contract drivers tried the 225/45-15 ECSTA on his Miata and switched right back to the 205s. Given the choice between the V700 tires, I'd choose Victoracers.

3) The new generation tires (V710 and A3S04) are awesome. Probably only good for about 60 runs on a Miata, but the A3S04s stick so much better than the V700 tires that it made me cackle with glee. The V710s are supposed to be right up there with them. The Hoosiers are no longer a "concrete-only" tire. Most of my use of them has been on asphalt, in fact. 205/50-15 is the only appropriate size available so far, but it's so wide that you'd have to be nuts to want to run anything wider. Mounted on stock wheels, 205 V710s are about as wide as 225 ECSTAs.

I just never would have thought 225's would fit on a 6" wide wheel.
Shoot, a 225 tire will fit on the stock 5.5" wide wheels (the Panasport replicas). I can provide proof if needed this weekend ;). A local racer uses 225 Hoosiers on them with no complaints (I trust him too since he's first in class 95% of the time, heh). A 225 will fit on a 6" wide wheel with no trouble at all.

great info John. Our club is not a part of the SCCA, but does follow the SCCA's rules. So I figured the .5" difference would push me out of stock class, but no matter. I'm sure the intake makes a more prominent difference. ;)
I don't think my setup would be as competitive in CSP since I do have 100,000 mile old stock suspension and only an aftermarket intake and muffler. It will suck but it doesn't really matter because I am in Novice anyways. I know the pax will not be as forgiving for CSP either. More motivation to get my PSS9s. :D

I'll ask nicely if they wouldn't mind .5 inches wider wheels if I put my stock intake back on. :)

Diane,
You may recall from the miata news group that after I bought my 10AE in 99, I tried all sorts of sizes of tires on the stock wheels. Since I was (am) running stock, I use the OEM wheels for the autox and the 7x15 enkei wheels for the street. I have used from 195/50-15 to 225/50-15. I also ran a set of 225/45-15 Hoosiers. Someplace I have the notes that made on the differences. If you want them let me know and I will find them. The long and short of it was that I was not competiting nationally so despite being the best set up, the 225/45-15 Hoosiers were not worth it to me.

why not the 92SE/93LE 14" BBS wheels? 9lbs!(yippy)
sheeeeeit!! I got two big reasons:
1. Rare hard to find, and if you do find em they will cost you an arm and a leg
B. They would DEF be illegal in stock class for a '99. :p

On the upside, I emailed the autocross club prez and he said I can run my Konigs in stock class. YAY!

I would love the info if you can find it. Thanks. :)

I have some life left in my 205/50-15 Azenis, so I am going to mount those on the Konigs when they get here. Once the 205 Azenis wear out, I am curious if I should try a bit wider on the new 6.5" wide rims. (dunno)

Oh, I am a nOOb, so spending the ca$h on Hoosiers is out of the question. :p The Azenis have done VERY well for me, so I may go with those again or look into some Yokos.
