Taking engine apart.

Now , I have some questions :)

First, in what order the valve cover bolts are supposed to take part - from middle to outside or outside to middle?

Then the head bolts, in what order?

Putting them back should be the opposite then.

Then with what torque should I tighten the head bolts, valve cover bolts, intake manifold, exhaust manifold?

I post some pics on tuesday when the head has been removed and taken to the P&P ;)

I have the manual which was in the web.
But I just wanted to ask for sure ;)

Since usually atleast for head bolts there are 2 tightening torques but the manual only gives one.

Considering that manual is produced by Mazda, I would go with what it says.

Well ....
The head is off :) It took 5 hours to take it off, since i was taking it slowly and marking everything I disconnected, since I want to put everything back in the right place :)

And also I didn't see one bracket which was holding the intake manifold in place, so I got pretty angry when it didn't came off :P

You will see how dirty my pistons are, I think that is because it runs very rich. I drove around a for some time with CEL on. So don't you do the same!

and did you forget to drain the engine oil?

oh and you can answer a question i REALLY REALLY need to know - what size in mm are the stock intake and exhaust valves????

Well ... my dirty engine bay gets a lot of attention :p
But since I drive rally with it and on gravel roads alot, then I don't clean it very often, but will do so after the engine is back together ;)

Thats good, that I am not the only one with so dirty pistons, at firsti t scared the hell out of me(nervous)

I didn't forgot to drain it, I just didnt do it. I will do it after the engine is putted back together.

About the valves, I have to check that later, since I'm at work now. Let you know in the evening or tomorrow about that.

yeah that'll be cool mate!

also, i cleaned my pistons just by using a rag and some thinners. worked a treat. just put sticky tape over the water and oil holes first so that no junk gets into them

Will do that :)

also, are you going to get before and after head flow numbers?
Nope, since we don't have a flow bench here(sad2)

The guy who is doing the P&P for me , has done most of the racing engines which are driving here in Estonia. So its just comes down to the experience and the difference on the dyno.

What exactly are you doing this for? Looks very interesting.
Yes, the head is going into port and polish. I think I will also raise the comp. rate by shaving off the head.

worst part is, putting it all back together is more time consuming as you want to make sure everything is in perfect place.

are you doing to get the arp head studs rather than using the stock head bolts? if i take my head off again that's what i'll be doing

Well, I marked every bolt that I removed, so there shouldnt be any problems putting it back together and since the exhaust and intake are stin in place, that makes job easier.

What do you mean by arp head studs?

I bought new bolts, not the Mazda ones though.

About the valve diameter, sorry, I forgotted to do it efore the head was taken to the P&P :( I'll do it on sunday when I get it back!

yeah no worries, sunday will be fine. actually that'll be pretty perfect.

here's a link to the arp web site (look for head studs) : http://www.arp-bolts.com/

they are just better and stronger than the stock type bolts - they also make putting the head back on a sinch!

Now the pistons have been cleaned and everything is ready for putting the engine back together, unfortunately I don't have the head yet, but I hope, I will receive it tomorrow :)

Some pics :P

Hey after you get your head p&p, tell me if you notice any increase in performance. I plan on getting my head, headers, intake manifold and whatever else I can p&p hopefully by this weekend.
