For a regular 3, I don't think it makes a difference that you can feel.
For a Speed, I think it makes a difference. I did it I was one of the first to give it a try, and most people are happy with the results. I couldn't care less about the noise from it. What I'm after is reduced pumping losses, and more efficiency in pulling air in. Simply put, the stock airbox's tiny opening is a choke on the intake. Pull that off, and open the box, and the turbo can pull more air in with less effort. It is the EXACT same principle as leaving your filter dirty vs. clean. Most of us would agree that a dirty air filter reduces efficiency and performance.. I don't care what the next person thinks about my car as long as I don't detract from its value. I challenge any of you to find fault with opening up the breathing passage of this turbo engine.
A regular 3, the difference is pretty minor because although pumping losses are again reduced, there is a limit to how much air an engine can pull in those cylinders. On a N/A engine, that limit is close to atmospheric pressure, since vacuum pulls the air in.
On a turbo car, any impedence against the turbine blades is a drop in efficiency. A turbo car can compress air into the cylinder, well above atmospheric levels. Doing this changes the rules considerably! This means a simple thing like pulling the airbox out and cutting it up will yield favorable results. Keep in mind, total peak power may not be much more, but there will be more power under the curve, because efficiency is increased. Sure an intake that has a smooth bore, and a proper mandrel bend, with a proper oversized air filter will all make a difference towards the positive. It is simply elaborating on the concept.
BTW an exhaust does the exact same thing: Better efficiency is the key for turbo cars. Normally aspirated cars need a bit of backpressure to improve low end torque. Turbo cars already have all the backpressure they'll ever need. Its called a turbo.
Now then, not to be rude or anything, but who wants to challenge this assertion?
