so i have my mazda protege 2nd gen..1995 year with the normal 1.6 b6 engine...wanna swap in the KLZE engine in it...what i wanna know is can it be done? will i have to alter my battery, etc or cut the bumper for it to fit...i've seen it been done before through pics on the net.

btw is the KLZE FWD or RWD?

KLZE is FWD and it can be done with enough cash. I dont know of anyone that has done this, most people swap a 1.8 GTR or GTX motor. Also know as BPD.

corksport has done it - call them and ask for travis, tell them ken from ProtegeGarage sent you

i dont live in the US. I live in the Caribbean so it would be some what difficult to call corksport.

However i am getting the engine straight from japan with everything needed to do the swap i.e. ECU, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, etc.

What i want to know is that will it fit in my protege without cutting the bumper or reloacting battery, etc? would it be a clean swap??

I was thinking bout the BPT 1.8turbo 180hp engine to swap in...

it should fit, you biggest problem will be the front subframe. getting all of the motor mounts, trans mount and axles in place. i would by a whole probe or mx6 front clip that way what ever you need to retrofit into your protege is there.

The K8 is found in the MX-3 GS, world's smallest production V6. Makes ~132hp, needs premium gas. The BP-05 makes almost that much(can easily make that much with a RX-7 AFM) and takes regular and is normally found in your Protege.

You should have a Z5 1.5L in your '95 Protege, unless you aren't in the US. We can't tell because you didn't put your location in your profile.

The KF is the 2.0L V6 found in the BHA chassis(meaning, your Protege's chassis) Mazda Lantis. Makes ~167hp and 132 ft lbs. IMO this engine is obsoleted by the KL-DE which makes 165hp and 160 ft lbs, or the KL-ZE that makes 200hp and 200ft lbs.

All of the engines you've mentioned thus far are FWD. You don't have to worry about RWD ones because they'd either be rotary cars, Miata(B6 or BP), 929/MPV(3.0L V6 will not fit in a Protege, no way), or B-series truck(none of which you'd want to use anyway).

so wat are you saying is that out of the KL engines you are saying that the KL DE is the best one? You said In your opinion that the KLZE is an obsoleted engine because of the KL DE

i live in the Caribbeain in a country called Trinidad. Our protege's known as 323f...came with the B6 engine. not the Z5

No, I said that the KF 2.0L is obsoleted by the KL 2.5.

The KL-ZE is the best in terms of power.

You have 323Fs down there? The "F" is the hatchback 5 door, where as our Proteges are sedans. Which do you have?

i have the sedan.....and yes we have the sedan's and the 5 door hatchbakcs as well.. It was an option either the hatchback or sedan when the 2nd gen was sold here.

The KLDE makes between 160-170 hp and 156-165 ft lbs tq depending on what year engine you buy and what car it's coming out of. The KL03 (93-97 mx6/626/probe) had anywhere between 160-164 hp and 156-160 ft lbs tq and was fairly popular, why? I don't know but it's eager to rev. This was the engine with the round ports and flows pretty good, but not as good as the other engines. The KL47 ('98-'02 626/Millenia engine) would be the more ideal engine to work with being that first off, it made 170 hp and 165 tq (170 tq in the Millenia). Second, it had square ports in which flowed better than the KLO3 making it really good for boost. and finally, for the '01 & '02 model years, the crank was lightened.

The engine of choice was the KLZE, which made anywhere between 195-200 hp and had only 165 ft lbs tq. It made it's power high in the rpm band (6500 rpm) and almost don't really drop off untill around 7500 rpm with higher comp pistons than the KL03 and 47 DE motor. The only drawback was they have a weaker intake valve springs and inferior retainers and would usually float, but not very often. Just swap the valvetrain from the DE and it should be fine.

Sorry, I had to ***** it up for a moment :D

The K series should fit, with the right motor and tranny mounts, check out the 2nd gen engine forum on clubprotege, we;ve been looking into it alot, Looks like the only physical mod you'll have to make is a notch on the radiator support for the oil cap. everything else seems bolt on, you dont even need to change hubs, from what we hear, they V6 axles will work
