Many will probably hate me for this, but would it be possible to treat reputation points similarly to the post count? In other words, reputation points from forums such as "Off Topic", "Humor", and "Dumpster" don't count towards the scoring sytem.

Opinions, tempers, and non-relavant ideas frequently surface. These situations do not reflect that of the overall purpose of this forum.

In brief, if the reputation system was geared towards those forums which actually pertain to this group, then the system might actually be somewhat usefull.

if that were done the only smart, fair, and easy way to do it is to set everyone back to zero- like fight club.

reputation is a JOKE. it used to be a decent system, but now it sucks and is USELESS.

Looking at where the mass of reputation points actually source (I.E. Off Topic, etc), the system has indeed become a joke. Marking such forums from being recorded towards the reputation system, like that of the post count, could possibly breath a bit of useful life into the system.

I'm using the assumption that the forum software can actually discount points from certain forums when so setup, such as when post counts were discounted from the users' counts. If this is possible, reseting the system shouldn't be required. Conversly, if such a scenario isn't possible, then yes, set them all to zero.

kill reputation. its taking up worthless space. especially that huge thread.

Many say the same about post counts. I think both should remain, but pertain to only relavant forums.

Damn Kevin, no sense of humor tonight :p
Actually to add to your idea , maybe you could only receive 1 rep point from each member, that would make them much more valuable. Or maybe 1 each pos or neg. Then people might take it seriously and not be so free to give em away.

There's always a sense of humor here ;) . I'm just trying to get my point across.

Honestly though, I don't think members should be limited to only one point per 'other' member. If a member knows absolutely nothing automotive-wise, and (say) I provide helpful info on multiple topics, then the rep. system could be useful. However, abuse of the system can become obvious in a thread (which is typicallly prevalent), and such a post could be moved to OT, or irrelevant posts towards the initial topic could be deleted.

Well, think of it like this, and I'm really just throwing this out there, if you only had one point to give each member, you'd be a whole lot more thoughtful about about giving it to somebody, but if something happened, you could take it back by giving neg. It would also mean that your rep would depend on how many actual members vouch for you, not just how popular you are with just a few members. Of course the world is full of thoughtless morons who still wouldn't get it, but whatcha gonna do?

everybody is just mad because our thread has like 6000 posts now..(but not taking up as much room as the longest thread) ........ you still have the referral system and post counts to guage off of. nomatter what you did to the rep system it would still be misused by people who get pissed off and give somebody bad rep. also what is the rep system needed for? their is a authorized vendor review list so and if you sell enough to get good rep you should be an authorized vendor. and now their is the scammer thing for anybody who is suspected of scamming any forum member below their name.

another problem with reputation is that pretty much nobody thinks to use it and everyone basically has one green boob (that doesn't post on the reputation points thread) so there is really no way to distinguish among anyone... I know I never even knew they existed until I came across that thread

and on what basis do you propose that points should be given?
