Hey guys, so I've been thinking about this... I only have like 18k miles left till my warranty is up on my 3s sedan, and I am going to blow through that so fast... I was thinking of turboing my car once the miles are up, but I keep hearing things about tranny problems and such.

raise ur hand if you turboed ur 2.3 liter and didn't have any problems, and tell me how it feels

i know lots of people have turboed without tranny problems its the fact that with the simplest adj they boost over 8psi or so and thats when the problems start... i am not sure what is out there now for tranny upgrades i will take a look around and see if anyone has made any headway with dealing with the added power..

awesome, yeah, I figured it was the amount of boost that the tranny just can't handle. Would there be any sort of transmission upgrade I might want to think about before I turbo, you think? Or maybe just make sure there's good boost controller installed?

There are gears available! I have them. ;-)

10 PSI is the limit for the 5 speed transmission to be safe. There are people running 12 with no problems. As long as you keep the stock engine mounts and stock clutch, you will be fine.

my bad i thought your kits were at 8 psi not 10... but are a lot of the problems related to the upgraded clutch/flywheel and mounts? as i am doing the fw/clutch in the next month or so and already have the mount and am hoping to be boosted before fall...

yeah I am thinking I'll be boosted by next winter or so,

and btw xenon929 I love ur car, man

My advise is to use the stock flywheel and a sprung ckutch disc. ACT might have it available and if not, you can have it made by them. Mounts will prevent the tranny from blowing. Every component that you replace for a stiffer one will make the tranny to absorb the hard power transition from engine to wheels. The springs in the clutch disc, the weight of the flywheel and the engine mounts play a very important part of how the tranny will perform. It is not the power, but the torque what damage the tranny and this is why we see that race cars with a lot less HP will damage the tranny in race tracks since those cars have gone to a stiff mounts, lightweight flywheel, stiffer suspensions and race clutches.

The setup that I recommend is the one we have been using with great sucess.

awesome, and what sort of fuel economy do you get on it with the turbo? Do you end up wishing for a 6th gear?

also, so I think I am hearing you correctly, all I would need to do is buy the kit and bolt it on, and should avoid doing anything to the transmission in order to save it because if I upgrade anything like engine mounts or the clutch, I'll end up ruining the transmission because it'll absorb too much torque?

I have benn running an FM turbo kit on my 2.0L P5 for almost 3 years. Other than an occasional loose hose of some kind, no problems. Running at 7psi daily and have about 30k miles in those 3 years.

Its pretty amazing that Xenon is getting a 12.6 second 1/4 Mile...thats pretty awesome mang. The only one I saw on your profile was a 14.5 second time. Lets see teh new slip :D

Coming soon... it should be in the 11's. We are currently doing some work to the tranny and working out some kinks with the Haltech E8.

Oh yes, these cars are pretty fast. I have done a 11.4 at 132 MPH at 8000 feet altitude and my friend, Luis, has done 11.7 at the same altitude in his Hiboosted 2.0 Liter Mazda 3 both running GT35R turbos and 25+ PSI of boost.
