Subwoofer in spare for '02 p5

2002 Mazda Protege5
I went to dealer today armed with my print out of the Mazda TSB on rusted rotors to investigate the possibility of getting my rust removed.

While I was there I decided to peek in at the 2003.5 p5.
I wanted to take a look at the subwoofer in spare thing.
Question, I wanted to know what size subwoofer is inside there?

What I wanted to do actually is see if that item is available for purchase seperate and can be mounted inside the 02 p5?

I wanted to know the size of the SUB, to see if a same size and more powerful sub could be modded to fit in there and then wired to an amp?

Has anyone done this or thought about doing this?

Elias - Hey what's up? If memory serves me right, it's a 5 1/4" driver with a built in 100 watt amp. I also believe the underside of the carpeted cover is modified with spacers to make it work.

Let us know what you're cooking up!

Yes it can...

The sub can be purchased and added to your '02. According to my dealer, the wiring is there since the sub was an option before '03.5. Again, this is coming from my dealer, actual result may vary.

I don't know the size, but it's can't be that big and it doesn't weight that much.

How did they handle the rotor problem?

the rotor situation is on hold, i have to go to the service center across town for that since they are currently moving...

want to know from someone who has the sub, how does it sound, regarding depth of bass...?

does the setup look like it alows for it to be modded with better sub?

lloking for feedback...
i am interested in a purchase, PM me with details...

It's pretty crummy, just filler nothing low. Sounds good for old school rap though. Doubt it'd be able to be modded, it's pretty tight the way they made it. The sub is a 5.25" square flange. As for the spacer-the whole trunk area floor is raised about 2" by a big plastic tray. There is a thread or two about it with pics..if you want to try a search.

I'm also thinking of getting rid of mine.

Hmm...curious. For those who don't listen to rap music.(please stop me from laughing) Is the sub good enough for real music?

impression i get from the amount of people that are getting rid of theirs, is that its not that good, like our stock radios

It's not horrible, but not THAT great. But that depends on your definition of "real" music. I've listened to just about ever type of music on it....it's better than nothing. I did disconnect it and listen, huge difference.

The stock sub is indeed a pioneer 5.25" mid driver in a bandpass box. Its not really a suwoofer so much as a midbass driver.
It really can't handle 60 hz and below. However for rap with higher bass beats and techno it does ok.

Also the amp is no where near a 100 watts rms, more like 50 watts rms.

The stock radio is very goopd as far as sound quality goes...just no balls as far as the amp in it. I want to stay stock to keep the window bashers at bay -- even with an alarm they'll get the radio if they want it bad enough. And just run speaker level inputs to an amp...but that's another thread altogether.

Elias...the problem with the subs is you need a decent sized driver to get "thump." if you want "drive by" style bass then you need a big driver -- you gotta move more air to make that kinda bass. if you want decent fill-in with a little thump then you can probably get away with a single 8" sub, but the b**** is figuring out how to mount it without losing the spare tire. Or ditch the spare and carry a can of "Fix-A-Flat." There aren't too many alternatives.

I hope to work out the few alternatoves part (lol)

hey 1st...who you laughing at? (peep)

I know you're the expert...so I'm sure it's something good.

And don't be shy...the voices talk to me too! (laugh)

While you're here...what do you think of the Infinity Basslink? Seems like the only "small" sub worth looking at.

Details: two 10" subs (one passive radiator), 200 watt amp, freq. resp. 20-120Hz. size is 14 1/2" wide x 13 3/8" high x 9 7/8" deep.

While you're here...what do you think of the smaller (lunch box size) powered subs by Infinity and there's one other -- do they put out decent bass?

Link please.
I'm not sure which one you mean? Are you refering to the basslink?

it was a consideration to actually remove the spare, and see what usable space is there, I have a polk sub at home that was ridiculous in a bandpass box... I wanted to install a single 10" JL Audio sub somewhere in the trunk, but I did not want to lost my trunk space or the ability to fold down my seats... that is the real plan... I cant figure anywhere to do it...the side plastic lining of the trunk that houses the jack kit, I guess could be cut into, except with deep bass, i dont know if that would rattle all of the pannels, or if the driver would fit...
I am actually suprised more people have not considered this, the praticallity of the hatchback feature would be lost wioth a huge bandpass box so I wanted to do a flush design.... any pics or ideas....

Elias...some of us (1stMP3 included) have thought about it. I'm surprised Thunderforms (if that's the company) doesn't make a replacement side panel with a built in sub. I agree with you...I want decent bass, but I bought the car for utility.

I was asking 1st about the Infinity Basslink because it's only 10" deep (self-contained) and can be vertically mounted. But that too would cut into the cargo room. Dumping the spare tire would be an idea...I've never used a spare tire in any car I've owned -- except for a ghetto tire rotation using the stock jack. Line that space with Dynomat, fab a quick release mounting rig, and you got a sub. Now where to put the amp?

I'll take a look on my lunch hour and see if I can brainstorm anything else for you. I'm definitely looking into the audio side for upgrades - i don't need a faster car -- but my budget will put that off until the Spring. Unless I get a new high-paying job -- yeah right...not in this has-been former steel town!

The spare is semi non existant as the there is a larg hump in the well to accomidate the pump underneither the car.

I am not a big fan of the bass link. For the money I like a seperate amp and sub, especiayl as you have more upgrade potential in a step by step manner. Also the basslink has always seemed overly boomy and muddy. Never crisp.

I got a 12" in my spare well, took a little bit of fabrication. Ended up having to raise the floor of the hatch only 3" from normal....
