subwoofer choices for small enclosure

The left side would be perfect for an 8" sub and would use up less useable space in the hatch. You'd be surprised how well aftermarket 8" subs perform...but I think they will fall short for techno/trance/hiphop/etc.

do you know if anyone makes an enclosure for an 8" that would fit the left side? I went to sound domain and it was all gm and ford pick-ups. I am going to get an alpine-9851 hu, spr-57ls componets in front, alpine type-r 5x7 coax in back door, alpine mrv-f450 5 channel amp and just need a sub. I am not looking to lose a lot af space in the hatch. I placed my 10" in there to see how it would fit, takes up alot of room, I saw a 10" jl at tweeter the other day that was wider and not as deep for about 180.00. I could always try to sell a set of 2 12" audiobahn subs enclosed that I got from another vehicle(long story). Anyways any ideas for an 8" or a thin 10"? Thanks

There is no enclosure available for any size woofer for the Protege5 unless you count the factory sub that was available on 2003 models (standard for 2003.5). Trust me it's not worth pursuing. Every enclosure you see on this board that looks like a Q-Form or something is actually a custom built fiberglass enclosure. These take quite a bit of work to make (just search for fiberglass subwoofer box) and most people are better off just building (or purchasing) one made out of MDF.

The back door of the Protege5 does not have 5x7 speaker openings. I believe they are 6" and a 6.5" speaker will fit just fine.

Honestly I don't think you need rear speakers at all. You can save yourself some money by purchasing a 4-channel amp to power front components and a single subwoofer by bridging the rear channels of the amp.

BUMP

Ok, I might be able to get an Alpine Type-X 10" for a good price paired up with an Alpine amp that matches it. It would be running at 1000w RMS, Crutchfeild lists enclosure size as "sealed box volume: 0.5-1.0 cubic feet". Running that much power in a fibreglass enclosure that small would I need to reinforce it alot?

Not a P5, but here's what I did with a 12" Infinity reference. I swapped a 10" Kicker L7 in a kicker factory ported box for this. The Infinity sounds overall better, and was only like 60 bucks on eBay (older, white cone model). I would use one again in a heartbeat.

CHECK IT OUT

Save your money and buy a 500w sub and amp. 1000w is overkill for a hatchback and once you hook it up, I guarantee the next thread you post will be titled "Why are my lights dimming". If you were running 200w x 2 RMS to a set of high output components up front then maybe 1000w might be suitable for bass duty, but in most cases 300-500w is more than enough.

Why not just get an Infinity Basslink? 10" sub (with diaphram so it sounds like two 10's) w/ 200 RMS amp.. its small and sounds great... I have one in my car.

pioneer makes a flat 12" sub that is for trucks. mounting depth is only a couple of inches. they sell it a glubes. as well the box is less tha a cubic foot.

another idea is a fusion 8". 200w so it doesn't take much of an amp to run. as well it is in a storage compartment of my dads toy and sounds pretty good.

just some ideas

I'm not a big fan of those pre-fab powered enclosures. I'd rather have a box made out of solid material with a nice subwoofer and a quality amp.

Thanks for your help and advice, on my home yesterday I stopped off at tweeters and picked up a JL 10" already enclosed. it is wider but not as deep. it should fit nicely behind the back seats. I'll get pics when I get it in or when I am home when it is light out. Also when I was there the guy was telling me about the new Alpine decks coming out next month, but they have a butload of the 9853's and the 9855's in stock. They won't sell so if anyone is looking for one of those models within the month you should be able to get a good deal on one (thumb)
