Nose out of joint: The Sube's aircraft inspired grille is out of style.

25 August 2006
Gavin McGrath

THE prominent propeller nose will be flung from future Subaru models.
The Japanese brand's controversial aircraft-inspired grilles, as featured on the Impreza and Tribeca, will disappear from the radar. Subaru's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, chose to use the propeller corporate face on the current model as a pointer to its aeronautical history.

But Subaru spokesman David Rowley concedes the new face, introduced to Impreza last September, has had mixed reviews, even though sales have not declined.

Rowley says the propeller face has not been applied to the facelifted Liberty and Outback, due out next month, and it won't make it back for the forthcoming Impreza, scheduled for release next year.

"It's fair to say the design will not appear on future Subarus, he says. "We had always said the aerospace theme could be applied in a variety of ways, like the way it's been presented on the Impreza and Tribeca.
"Fuji Heavy Industries said it would evolve over time. But it has not really been applied to Liberty and Outback."

Subaru's chief designer, Andreas Zapatinas, has resigned, effective the end of last month, but it is believed he was fired.

Rowley says Zapatinas was not responsible for the propeller theme: the Impreza and Tribeca designs were well advanced when the former Alfa and Fiat designer joined the Japanese carmaker.

Rowley says the first Zapatinas design is the next Impreza, due next year.

He is also tight-lipped about whether the company will return to another core plank of Subaru's brand image, rallying, in Australia. "We are still weighing up a variety of motorsport options on the domestic scene," he says.

Meanwhile, Subarus are to develop multiple personalities, with a new computer management system called SI-Drive (Subaru Intelligent) to appear on top-of-the-range Liberty and Outback models next month.
The system works with engine, gearbox and electronic throttle control to produce three switchable driving modes: Intelligent mode for better fuel economy, Sport mode with sharper throttle response and gear change points set at higher revs, and Sport Sharp mode for maximum acceleration. There is also an extra "Eco" gauge and a graphic torque curve monitor.

It's always something with the nose, headlights, etc. with that company. At least they try to be different.

Thank goodness, I never liked that grille and it grew on some people but certainly not for me.

I thought the front end of the previous Impreza wasn't too bad. I like those lights.

These guys have never had an idea of how to design a good looking car. It's about time they take a trip to Pininfarina. I guess they finally realized that they're selling an automobile and not a plane. The font end of the current impreza doesn't even fit right with the rest of the car. Lines look horrible. I know I sound like a scooby hater, but come on! If hyundai can actually build a sexy car, which they are, why can't this great automobile company like subaru? Scooby dooby doo remains fuuuuugly.

good riddance, that front grille design was hideous, especially on the Tribeca

in comparison, Mazda has come up with a very good design theme for all their current generation cars and crossovers, well done Mazda (thumb)

I love the Tribeca and would have purchased one for my wife, if it didnt have that horrible front end. Totally killed it for me. As for Mazda, they also have some problems with front grills...the RX8, CX7 and MPS6 grills are huge...look at your pic^ and you can tell the center grill doesnt flow well with anything. Sowy.

i love my angry guppy front end (poke)

Love the design of the rx8. I believe it was actually bmw that used the rx8 as an example to improve the back seat of the 3 series two door in order to make it a bit roomier. Plus the rx8 has design cues that relate directly to the mazda auto design and engineering...ie the rotary emblem.

Haha!Good move on Suby's part.Love the headlights, hate that nasty "Alfa Romeo" front end. What they REALLY need to do is change that boring ass interior.I mean c'mon, our P5s have better looking interior than the Imprezas!Anyway,as far as Subarus,I still love the old GC8 front ends(pre-2002 WRX) bc it has that mean street look, kinda like the Evo.

Same here and I read that bit of info too.

I have no complaints on the interior department...just the front fascia.

I didn't like it but I didn't hate it.. I'd be interested to see what their next front "scheme" looks like

their designs have always been on the quirky side, but appealed to many. it's what always kept me away.
