STX Build Thread

Yeah for me! Coilovers are on the way, just waiting for the Bilsteins.

Cai

I don't understand why you can't install a CAI. If you can relocate the battery why can't you relocate the coolant bottle.

The rule book states that you can not modify "The existing structure of the car." The coolant bottle is not a structural part of the car. I think this just means you can't cut any holes in the car. But "Holes may be drilled for mounting."

Thoughts?

You can install a CAI you just can't move the coolant bottle to do it.

Battery relocation is IMO a fairly common mod and is specifically allowed in the rules.
If you are able to move around the coolant bottle somebody is going to move it to better their weight distrubution as well as moving anything else under the hood that they can.

The SCCA old addage is, if it doesn't say you can, you can't" I found out in the Appendix A of the 2006 rule book that the "chassis modifitcation" referred towas because of the Minis wanting to remove part of the fire wall to get coldair in using the JCW kit. Overflow bottle, not quite cutting the firewall, but...

However reading the Stock class rules 13.10 G reads, "addition of water expansion tanks is allowed. Interesting, It does not say size, location, Material or anything else. Maybe time to look into a Canton water tank...

Cai

And you can also remove the Air conditioning. That's a lot of weight. The coolant bottle is a piece of plastic with some fluid in it!

Has anyone tried the SCCA forums to see what they think of the coolant bottle moving issue?

well anyone else hear custom made cai then? Just wondering, I don't really know it thats allowed but, it would seem to be a good fix.

yes it is allowed as long as no major components are relocated (i.e. intake manifold) or bodywork/structure is modified. I believe the air flow sensor must stay w/in certain distance of it's orginal location as well.

"not sure if you call it an answer."

No, it raised more questions. But thanks for the link, it was good info.

I'll be at a regional event this weekend so I'm going to ask some questions. I know the Detroit Region SCCA Director, she co-drove my MSP last race, so maybe she can point me in the right direction to find out some answers. I wish they would make these rules more specific.

Anyone know how much weight you can shed off the MSP by removing the AC?

Well, by definintion of RE-circulate it is pouring back into the intake stream and therefor becomes part of the intake tract before the turbo. The loop tube could be interpreted either way, YMMV....

The MAF rule is not a measurement, it was written with the intent to keep the MAF in the same part if the intake tract, so people could not place it past the turbo etc.

got a look at an MSP tonight with injen tonight. as long as the mounting bracket is still in stock location you should be alright. this one was still on the stock bracket

Yes, still on the stock bracket, but the bracket has been relocated. therefore it is not legal. The Injen instructions show you where to drill the bracket to move it. I didn't drill mine, I just turned it a bit and used a different mounting hole. But that was not legal either.

Who deemed it not legal? Was it protested or was this an interpretation of yours?

I did.. runs along the same path as the original air box and plugs directly into the MAF in its original location.

However, the coolent bottle still has to move to get the pipe down the hole and the filter in the well behind the fog light.

This home made CAI is now in my spare parts bin as I slowly work my car to the DSP level and replaced it with the Injen.

If you have a rule book you can read about the clarification in regards to all the Minis wanting to move a plastic part that allows them to run the JCW intake. Why would I make something potentially beneficial to me illegal?

I've known several people who have done this to get a clarification of the rulebook. It is not uncommon.
