Strange, whine in engine bay

I've just recently noticed this low volume whine coming from the engine bay. The shop tech took a stethoscope and says it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side where the timing gears are. But the way sound travels through a motor...I think it can come from anywhere.

The weird thing is that when the sound is happening..I can feel it in the shifter. THis very very slight vibration. It's like when a vibrating metal is GRAZING another vibrating metal piece. I feel the fluctuating "algorithm" in the shifter. There is no tapping sound (metal tapping on another), no squeak, no squeals. Just a very low whining sound.

I suspect it could be tranny related. I'm not sure.

I can't pinpoint it when I open the hood and just listen on a quiet night/day.

Any ideas what to check?

Car has 161,000 km

If your PS fluid resevoir is a bit low, your pump can produce an audible whine (louder with decreasing fluid levels). You may not be able to "feel" your steering affected if your fluid level is high enough. It sounds a lot like metal on metal. Just a thought.

Also, check that your drive belt is tensioned correctly. If the whine is coming from the transaxle at idle, it may very well be your oil pump.

Checked..fluid levels are at nominal levels. Water pump was changed out with my timing belt. Oil pump is good..oil pressure is at nominal level.

I have the same issue in my P5.

Mine is related to some slight gear lash in 5th gear. You can feel it in the shifter exactly how u described it. You cant feel it when shifting gears or driving but if you pull the cover you can feel the lash there.

I also know this because it only happened after i swapped out my p5 5th for a probe gt 5th gear.

Odd, mine started making a similar noise a few weeks ago. Mine only does it at low idle RPMs and goes away when the car is warmed up. I afraid of something horrible like the water pump, so I guess I will just hope it goes away. After i check the PS fluid. :)

Ya mine's noticeable in idle only. Low RPM as well.

mine does this too...but i think its something that has to do with the wheel

not sure what though cuz i have a new suspension, new wheel bearings, control arm has about 65,000 kms on it.

it only does it on the highway......I hope it is just a wheel problem and not an engine thing

is it like a whine or a hum? and its every 5 seconds, goes from low to a bit louder and so on?
