I've just recently noticed this low volume whine coming from the engine bay. The shop tech took a stethoscope and says it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side where the timing gears are. But the way sound travels through a motor...I think it can come from anywhere.
The weird thing is that when the sound is happening..I can feel it in the shifter. THis very very slight vibration. It's like when a vibrating metal is GRAZING another vibrating metal piece. I feel the fluctuating "algorithm" in the shifter. There is no tapping sound (metal tapping on another), no squeak, no squeals. Just a very low whining sound.
I suspect it could be tranny related. I'm not sure.
I can't pinpoint it when I open the hood and just listen on a quiet night/day.
Any ideas what to check?
