Strange metalic sound under the hood

My car is making a random metalic sound under the hood at about 3000 rpm under acceleration. If i puppy it and keep the rpm down i do not hear it. It sounds like a rotational dry bearing chatter, and it is brief, does it for an instant then stops. I do not feel it in the car, only hear it. engine does not miss a beat, no feeling through the shifter. Just noise. kinda loud too. Any ideas guys?

Right at acceleration? Maybe fuel pump clatter, a not unknown phenomenon on these cars....

hard to say, can you be more specific with the type of noise? clacking, pings, knocks etc?

It is only does it at around 3000. Not At low rpms. I can drive it fine under 2800rpm or so. It comes on abruptly, last about a second, Mettalic sound, loud, not a small tap or clatter. Sounds maybe rotational. It is dry mettalic, not like something bathed in oil. Like something spinning against a housing or if you have ever had a mini-bike or go-kart with a cyntrifical clutch and the bearing goes dry, like that only louder. Stops quikly but could be because it surprizes me and I lift my foot. Have to get out and test again. Thank you for the response guys.

knock Retard...from the sound that your describing, I used to get it every once awhile when crusing at 3k and it about gave me a heart attack...I thought the b**** was going to blow up.!

Sounds like the VVT going out..
