Stock Subwoofer, Pics inside

So I was working on my car this past week, and my dad decides to take apart the stock subwoofer just for the hell of it (he's an electrician, and likes to mess with that stuff), so I decided to take a picture of the inside of the sub. I must say.. not impressive at all. Looks like a 5 inch speaker.. and a 50 watt (RMS) amp. Notice that nice piece of fiberglass they kinda just wedged in there between those two "pillar" things (Yes, thats how it came stock). Anyways, I guess its pretty amazing how well it sounds for what it is.. but it definately isn't much. Guess its time for a 10 inch, nice pair of components up front, and a couple amps.

Oh, thats even worse that I thought. :(

I guess any subwoofer is better than no subwoofer, but Mazda could have done better than that.

(Ive got one too, so not dogging you or anything).

Disection is fun (thumb)
5.25" a spec'd.

Both the speakers size and the amps power have been known and discussed for some time now. Both are even listd in the Audio FAQ.

Yeah I figured you guys had the exact specs somewhere on the forums.. sorry 1sty, summer laziness prevents me from using that search button. I just started this thread cause I had the picture, and I thought I'd post it for kicks..

I don't think Mazda really coulda done much better. They were most likely on a budget, seeing as they didn't charge extra for the woofer in there for the later models.. and it does serve its purpose i guess.. lotta room for improvement though hahah

no need to appologies. I'm no the "search" Nazi that some other members are :D

I had one of the Pioneer(thats who actualy makes it) subs in my P5. Its a nice little setup and is great for midbass although sub bass is lacking. Pioneer didn't so to well selling it on there own but they made a good deal selling them to manufacturers like mazda. You can't even buy them aftermarket anymore. Since it has a built in LOC and takes up almost no space its a great little upgrade. Not one I would personaly spend money on though.

im pretty sure thats not a sub., its more of a mid bass/driver thing, maybe just a woofer

Is it the Pioneer spare tire sub? I remember seeing one in a Pioneer catalog as a space saver. They even used to make car seat covers that vibrate (much like a bass shaker) for those with limited space.

Just goes to show you that you don't need huge size or massive power to sound good :) You just need the right speaker and enclosure.

I wonder what exact speaker that is? And what type of enclosure that exactly is?

Although even from the pictures I can't be sure but the enclosure looks to be a bandpass.

I second the bandpass. There is a second, completely sealed enclosure that the front of the woofer plays into.

I'd love to get my hands on the T/S settings for that 5.25" :)
