I know its along shot but... I took out my center console this morning to clean it(ewww previous owner) and notice the stock shifter has like a billet aluminum piece on top of it... i was wondering and also heard that this piece comes off and then you can just put your shift knob on the lower black part? anyone? thanks

Looks like a set screw in that second pic. Only one way to find out. Take it off!! If it comes off and there are matching threads under there, it's your lucky day!! IF not, I'm sure you could have a shop thread it for you. Or just pickup a short shifter.

i remember back in 2001 when i bought my car, that was the ghetto way of getting a short shifter. AND, then in late 01, the MP3 was supplied with a shifter that was exactly that - a shortened shift lever.

my advice: don't do it. get a proper short shifter.

A short shifter isn't just a shortened shifter, it's also dif. at the bottom where it connects to the linkage.

I too say just pick up a short shifter.

I went all out and got the TWM full setup. Looks good and functions flawlessly!!

well i did it... there are no threads under it but i just put on an aftermarket shift knob...
You have to heat it up and it slides off.
thanks tho

Let's see a pic. The knobs you pick up at the auto parts stores don't have threads. Just set screws, so, that would work.

Curious to see how the "Sack" is gonna look now with a shortened shifter

all buttoned, up it won't look much different than a mazdaspeed shifter

i like it... i know its not a true short shifter.. my old car had a pacesetter adjustable one... i wish i would have kept it for this.... but oh well... i like it so far.. give it a week to see

Doesn't look bad at all. Short shifter on the cheap! lol. Let us know how it works in daily driving.

thats one the first thing i notice when i got my car and cleaned everything. i attempted to unscrew it a few times never thought it would be glue on. thanks ill do that untill i get a real short shift

I have a ebay shifter and I love it! A short shifter is a short shifter, just like a intake.

This one is the perfect height, and really nice throw distance, not to short where its hard to tell what gear/hard throw but not to far either, its perfect!

Just as good as a B&M if you ask me. Hopefully I will have TWM bushings soon though!'

Oh the price of the shifter came out to $21 :) I can take pics of it installed if needed
