Stock shifter Mod

I have an Idea.

I wanted to shorten my shifter.

What I was thinking was to take off the extention that is on the shaft. Cut the shaft that is left in the car about 1"-1.5". And then put the extention back on. That way I could still use the stock boot and knob. And it would look pretty good.

Has anyone done this?

Yes but the stock boot, sits on the extention on the top.

The boot is glued to a ring on the top of the shifter, and the ring sits on the extention.

thats a good idea.

except for the fact it is thinner under the extension, so you would have to mill off the shaft to get the extension to fit back on.

so i dont think its gunna work.

You cut the shaft about an inch. And put the extention back on.

I don't understand what your talking about.

OK I looked at the picture of the stock shifter compared to the aftermarket ones.

I see what you are saying it is tapered. It thins out.

You just cut the extention as well with a hack saw. The extention should be only cheap lite metal.

I used a dremel and cut it off. When you do it the extension is full of rubber, like a damper for vibrations. After I cut it off I went out and got a sweet ass MOMO Silver carbon shifter. All the s*** required is there. As to keeping the boot up. You will have to make the plastic hole a little bigger. Before puting it all back together wrap electrical tape around the shifter to form a place for the ring to lay on. The stock boot will be too big, just push it down and it will look great.

Helped?? Hope So.

you cut the extention right at the shaft?

So, now you don't have a rubber damper?

Did you rethread the shaft?

No, I installed an aftermarket Shift Knobbie!!

The dampener thing really didn't do much.

Only cut the silver thing that has a thread off. You will be left with a short throw shifter with no threading. Thats where the Aftermarket Shift Ball Comes in. Did it last year, No regrets.

couldnt stand the gap between my momo knob and stock boot, even held up, the bottom screw still makes it look like a huge gap... so i dremeled the ring of the boot just enough so i could shove it up my momo knob :) i didnt even need the bottom screw cap from the knob, it's such a snug fit :) i guess i was just lucky and careful not to dremel too much, now, no gap and looking great...
