Stock Connecting Rod Material?

BOOSTR

1 OWNR MSP
Does anyone know what our MSP stock connecting rods are made out of? I will feel better if its Forged steel. Those will take the additional boost pressure better, even without forged pistons.

They are not forged if that's what you're asking. Just invest in some Pauter rods...

The MSP has forged rods...Just not as strong as say Pauter rods are.

But they are forged.

indeed. forged but not beefy. aftermarket forged rods are able to take more of a beating, stretch etc

don't trust the rods to take much extra boost, they're forged but thin. if you don't detonate or have any other bad things that will cause extra stress on the rod happen by having proper engine management, they'll be good for a while, but if you just want to turn up the boost a bunch, don't expect them to last long. the rods are one of the main weaknesses of the motor.

Where did you guys get the info that the rods were forged?

Keith at FP, who has spoken extensively with people in Mazda regarding the MSP.

So are the stock forged rods specific to the MSP? I understood that the engine found in the MSP is nothing more than a plain jane FS-DE with a turbo. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

From what I had heard, they rebuilt the motors on the dock with the rods for the MSP. That was part of the "delay" on the MSP release.

The rods are MSP specific. However, getting part numbers might be a problem, because if the new rods part numbers didn't make it into the parts book, so sorry.

This has happened before, I believe on the 323.

The motor is a regular FS-DE with lower compression pistons, and apparently different rods.
I'm pretty sure it has a better fuel system as well, bigger injectors, and the ECU.

No. The pistons are the same 9.1:1 ratio pistons in all the 3rd Gen Protege FS-DE's. The fuel system has not been changed either. The only change to the ECU is the parameters, but it is the standard 3rd Gen box.

The majority of the japanese automakers have forged crank and rods. So is the case with the protege. They are NOT specific to the MSP only.
This also does not mean that they are any stronger really than some cast rods out there. Just the process in which they are crafted. In theory they are stronger. One of the downfalls to the rods on the FS motor is the rod fastener. They dont like high revs. If tuned properly the FS can be a very nice little ride with stock internals. So long as you keep under 6000rpm.
If someone would like a pic of the pauters and the stock rod next to each other let me know.

There are so many "I've heards" as to what the actual delay was. Honestly, I don't see any cost effectivness in doing a complete engine removal and teardown at the docks, but who knows. (dunno). Thanks for the info tho.

I heard rumor that callaway was suppoesed to do it but never did.

our motor is the same as any other protege,, minus the ecu guys. nothing special.thats why it breaks a lot. ever wander why we arnt supposed to crank up the boost? b/c our internals are s***.... mazda was too eager to get our cars out, they didnt even have time to fabricate our original hardpipes......

werd, as perf said the FS-DE has a forged crank and connecting rods and cast pistons. the Mazdaspeed Protege does not have any internal differences, they just slapped on a T25!!
