still running lean in open loop......

Hey,

I'm experiencing the same problem. What I suggest you try doing is swapping the VTCS and the FPR vacuum solenoids around. You might have a problem with the FPR solenoid. Just make sure to configure the vacuum ports the same as the one you're swapping it with. You can pull that oval cap and move it to the other port to cover it. The solenoids are the black things on top of the manifold. The one with the green plug towards the pass side is the VTCS one and the one with the brown plug above the throttle body is the FPR one. The all do the same thing, but are configured differently by where the vacuum lines are plugged in. I know this is not that clear, but I can't make it any clearer at the moment...got too much on my mind :(

Ok I've known this all along, but refrained from posting until I consulted with a porsche engine mgmt veteran and he confirmed what I'm about to say. There is no way no how you could be running lean enough to peg the a/f gauge(for more than 2 seconds for open/closed switch) and not throw a cel with a properly functioning and assembled computer system. PERIOD. The only way it would be possible for you to be that lean(even on a narrow band this would equate to above 15:1) would for either the gauge to be bad, an irregular resonating power surge(more about this later if it turns out to be this), or incorrect installation. I'm not calling you an idiot or anythign like that, all I'm saying is that there is no way your ecu would be happy receiving an o2 value that high and not complain in the form of throwing a code...So my advice is take the gauge out and exchange/return it and reinstall a new gauge and have someone else double check you get good taps on the proper wires. In the mean time I would also run some seafoam through your fuel system just for good measures. If the above doesn't fix your problem then i'd almost be willing to be something is up with the ecu...

i understand you completely, but....if it has been reading correct for maybe 45,000 miles now, and all the suden reads dead lean under this specific condition i dont see why it would only malfunction at that exact point and work correctly all other times....and if i stay in it while it reads lean i have audible detonation. im trying to find a regional dynojet to get on and hook up to a wideband to see exactly what it is, but i really dont know if there is one close (southcentral pa) again, the only things other than stock are gutted cats, mil eliminator, cold air, type s on stock pipes, and i think that is it, other than having it "flashed" way back when mazda first came out with the hesitation fix.

hmm well I would start praying its not your ecu then...ive seen a lot of people toast ecus when putting in mil elims....even experienced mechanics...

yea find a dyno and see if you really are running that lean. When you put the car on the dyno make sure you are at completely stock...if you can remove it and put it back to factory do it...if you really are running that lean then it has to be an ecu problem...

hmm, found a dyno in westminster, md and they want $115 for 2 pulls and the a/f read out.......this sounds a little high is it not??? dont suppose anyone knows of another dyno regionally to me??

i know you're talking about EIP tuning.. and they do good work. that price seems reasonable. and..i think theres AGILE performance, and EXTREME motorsports...they both i believe, have dynos.

actually i just found a place in york, pa that will do 3 pulls with a\f for $75...not bad, i think i'll go there :)

cool man. where is that?

its about 30min north of gettysburg, he said he'll be there sat&sun morning so i'm gonna try and go up sunday if i dont have to work, maybe i can finally figure out what exactly is wrong with this thing. i called around to ask if anyone knew where a dyno was and this is the guy i was pointed to, said he does good work so we'll see....

...my bad, im not sure exactly, other than what superpages says i havent looked it up yet. its called york dyno, clever enough.
