still alots of road noise

You're Likely Right!

Heheh, the other day when I was ranting to my girlfriend about the noise issue she said the same thing, and I must respect your commentary, Dre, with no offense taken!

That said, I honestly wish ALL Mazda releases would exhibit the same (or better) quiet noise characteristics of the Jetta.

And quickly, that's not to say I'd want a Jetta-- The 3 things that make a Jetta worthwhile in my opinion: Appearance (I've long thought the Jetta looks cool), Interior design/quality (I believe VW interiors are first rate), and driving quality (quiet, decent ride). Other than that, VW's are an ill advised, unreliable, expensive investment.

Anyway, sorry to rant, folks-- This is one of my pet peeves (noise, rattles, and the like)...

I must admit, I am pretty picky about this sorta of thing as well, but the fact that I ride a motorcycle probably helps a little. I'm so used to hearing the loud Hindle exhaust behind me and the wind rush through my helmet. That's why I always wear my trusty ear plugs when I go out for a rip :D

I have a 2002.5 Protege5, and I have a 2003 Jetta GLS Wagon. Here's what I can tell you:

1) The Jetta is MUCH quieter
2) The P5 has more passenger room (esp. back seat) but less cargo room
3) The Jetta is in a different PRICE class, not a different size class

So, why is the Jetta much quieter? Thicker door skins (metal) and glass, more sound insulation in doors and floor, more soundproofing underneath, better door seals. While making the cabin quieter, it also adds a LOT of weight to the car.

It's a tradeoff. I always take the Jetta on long road trips because it is a much more comfortable ride. I drive the P5 on a daily basis because it is more fun to drive and gets better mileage.

Re: I Already Have

Ahh! Regarding noise dissatisfaction, I already have completed an exhaustive, all encompassing noise control project on my Protege.

I kid you not: Double layer of B-Quiet's Brown Bread dampener material throughout the entire interior, covered in turn by a single layer of B-Quiet's L-Comp, LEAD based absorbtion material (except for the doors, which only have the double Brown Bread on them due to space limitations, and the roof which is also limited).

I worked on my car over the course of an entire month, going two weeks where the car was out of drivable service, with weather interruptions, work obligations, etc, etc, etc.. It was relentless, tedious, back-breaking toil. And the results?

Marginal difference, at best. I'd say there is little that can help the Protege if all the KILL MYSELF work I did provided little relief from the horrible raucous of road noise in this car. After around $800 bucks in material and 200 lbs. of added weight, I concluded that my only course of action was looking toward a different car.

So my criticism does not come without just cause or lack of good faith effort to rectify the situation-- Even with extreme measure. I've done all I will tolerate, I'm sorry to say.

geez, why all this work? if you want a super quiet car why not buy an acura or a buick?
i dont think the protege is that loud...most cars are comparable to the protege in noise levels. actually, i find it more quieter then my 00' protege and my '90 jetta

its in the compact class so you cant expect buick like interior silence for that price. the car was designed for superb handling and not soft and plush ride.

Almost every review I have read of the Protege/Protege5 has listed road noise and/or wind noise as one of the weak points of the car. I realized that when I bought it, I noticed it right away when I test drove it. I don't expect it to be as quiet as a Lexus, but I also don't expect it to sound like a window is open.

Limited Options

I didn't buy an Acura or Buick because...

1. I can't afford an Acura.
2. It would be a cold day in Hell before I ever spent my hard earned money on a GM product, including Buick.

If money wasn't an issue, I'd buy a BMW 5-Series, as they're arguably the finest production vehicles ever built-- Ever.

I wanted to try and salvage my ownership of the ES, as it remains a fun 'zip around town' kind of car-- That's why I put so much work into it. That's also why I was so disappointed by the lack of results, basically leaving no alternative but to think about getting something else.

Anyway, I'll consider the Mazda 3 when I get a chance to actually test one and after it's been out long enough for the price to come down to reasonable levels. But I'm also considering a Honda Accord. Although I think they're ugly, I figure maybe I'll get used to it, and beyond that it's an excellent, reliable, quiet, smooth driving, brisk performing car-- That also offers impressive efficiency-- Another characteristic I greatly value. But alas, an Accord equipped with what I insist on (side head protection, among other things) might well be too expensive for me (Dammit! :( ). Oh Yeah! I'm also interested in what the next Nissan Sentra will be like, but that might not be out soon enough for me to wait...

Man, I'm screwed! ;)

"Because they're German cars they're more expensive"

I agree, Eugeosyncline.

If the above quote is accurate, then apparently VW's ad campaign of about 10 years ago was successful. 10+ years ago, VW was considered the econo euro car. VW brought images of the OLD bug, and the old 70's box vans. VW was NOT classy. Then, somewhere in the early 90's VW brilliantly brought the campaign saying something like, "you want the quality of German engineering and an affordable price, check out VW."

Amazing how that's shaped a new generation. About the same as "pork the other white meat". (Pork is a RED meat, BTW, and carries all the badness of red meat.)

At any rate, I guess I'm getting off topic. But if the Mazda3 is quieter than a civic (is it really?) than I'd be happy. Cuz I currently drive a civic.

hi all sorry about my late reply

1st i want to answer some of ur guys ques...

yes i took the 3 for a testdrive..

and no i am not comparing it to an bmw

and i am saying its still got alots of road noise compared to others in the same class... vw golf, renault megane, toyota corolla, seat leon, and a few more cars. they tested the noise from 50km/h tilll 160km/h 30miles an hour till 100 and the mazda3 was kinda noizy.

but alots of reviewers said the same thing about the p5 weak points are road window noise.....

its same for the mazda3 still the same prob...

engine noise has been reduced a little bit compared 2 the p5.

btw mazda 6 has the same issue, more road noise than the ones they compared 2

mazda should spend little more
time and money for that... donthave to be alot just a little bit more..
