It cant be named M1

This is going to be the ultimate sports-hatch by packing an extra 50+ bhp over the current BMW 130 or VW Golf R32.
Munich would love to call the car M1, but that would take away the glory from the legendary late 1970s M1 supercar, so the range-topping 1-Series will have to do with a 135ti badge on the rear, hinting to the sophisticated 3.0-litre turbo engine delivering no less than 306 bhp!
Its just been presented in the 3-Series coupe and should be able to turn the 1-Series into a real cannon ball on wheels.

While I fully understand the M1 nomenclature issue, I fear the use of a "ti" in America. The poor mans BMW of the ninetees had a 1.8 litre, 139 bhp four-cylinder M42 engine for the 1995 model year. Not a hot seller here as options were limited as well. However, the German buyers had the exclusive and rare 323ti option with a 2.5L, 170hp Inline-6.

5 door Hatchbacks are making a comeback baby!

now, make that in a 2 door, with that engine, that'd be amazing!

BMW has a 3 door hatch in development. Plus developing sedan, coupe, convertible, and sportwagon versions.

Sweet motor. Too bad the car looks like a crumpled origami hot mess. I'd rather have an MS3, GTI or the new Audi S3

I think I'd rather the Beemer.

The Audi is a pseudo AWD and not a 'real' quattro at all, the Golf GTI still is a FWD Golf and the only saving grace is its excellent build quality, and as for the Mazdaspeed 3....it may well be a rocket but its no comparison to a finely tuned RWD BMW.

this is true... although i don't like the aesthetics much either

I'd probably take the Audi first, the MS3 2nd and the GTI third. I just can't get past the looks of the bimmer no matter how well it drives and honestly, are you really going to push these cars to their limits? Mazda has worked handling wonders with FWD in the past (see MP3 and MSP) and I think that the MS3 would have a good chance of beating that bimmer around a track FWD or not.

Yeah, sorry, but this stands as one of the uglier BMWs I've seen. Having a nice engine in it is like putting whipped cream on dog sh*t...

How about this?

BMW M Coupe Will Hit the Streets Soon

When the BMW Z4 Coupe concept made its debut at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, it not only looked good, it packed 261 horsepower, a set of 19-inch wheels and short gears for maximum acceleration. We fully expect to see a production version of that concept soon, but our latest spy photos also indicate that a Motorsport version could be on the way as well.

The 2007 BMW M Coupe prototype was spotted at every manufacturer's favorite test track, the Nrburgring. Unlike the concept shown in Frankfurt, the M coupe prototype rode on a set of double-spoke wheels similar to those used on several Motorsport cars over the last several years. A quick check of the tailpipes reveals four outlets another Motorsport trademark. Although the upcoming M3 is expected to get a 400-hp V8 under its hood, the M Coupe will probably stick with a high-powered version of the standard six. The Z4 coupe could go on sale early next year so expect the M coupe to arrive by the summer of 2006.

2007 BMW Z4 M Coupe - Auto Shows
The M Coupe is back, and this time it doesn't look like a clown shoe. With a base price around $50,000 and 330 hp in a light body, it will do 0-60 in less than 5 seconds.

The BMW M Coupe is the production version of the wildly popular Z4 coupe concept shown at the 2005 Frankfurt auto show. With the outgoing E46 M3's fantastic inline-six (making 330 hp in the M Coupe) and limited-slip differential, but with hundreds of pounds less weight to haul around, this coupe will accelerate from 0-60 in less than 5 seconds. BMW pegs the Z4 M Coupe's weight at 3104 lbs, which is 150 lbs heavier than the 295-hp Porsche Cayman S. If you're counting, that makes the Z4 M Coupe's power-to-weight ratio 8 percent better than the Porsche's. Enthusiasts have complained bitterly about all the technology-for-technology's-sake in recent BMW cars, and somebody at the M division is listening: Like the Z4 M Roadster, the Z4 M Coupe comes with a conventional 6-speed manual transmission, conventional hydraulically assisted steering, and conventional springs and shocks. This is like missionary sex with Jessica Simpson no bad thing. The Z4 M Coupe will cost approximately $50,000, and for around $10,000 less, there will also be a non-M Z4 coupe with a 255-hp inline-six. Both cars arrive in the U.S. in late summer of 2006.

I wanted one of these when they came out!

Hmm, The Z4 M Coupe is already here. I've driven one and its an awesome car.

I like the looks of the Z4 coupe better but the only bimmer I'd want to own in the post bangle design era is the new 3 series coupe with the twin turbo staright 6

Is the S3 coming to the USDM? What about a 3-door A3? I was sooooo pissed when VW decided to send only the 5-door A3 over.... :(
