Well it finally happened, and somehow still made it home

99.9% sure it's a spun rod bearing, very loud knock rpm and throttle related. Will not idle just cuts off and struggles to start back up. I've had a lifter tick for a couple years now, recently started getting louder. I was going to pull valve cover this weekend to check Clearence and order new shims, aparently ill be shopping for a new motor instead.

Anyways what do you guys say? Spun rod bearing or dropped valve? Rebuild or replace?

Yea sounds like rod or maybe main bearings, you couldve broke a piston skirt too though :/ that would suck.
But if you say you have had a ticking lifter for a while it may very well be a dropped valve, probably broke through the seat

i can get you prices and part numbers from what i sell here at work (clevite, acl, king, saftey or saftey and vicor for gaskets) so you could have an idea of the cost. Buuuut you will probably be better off buying them online, cheaper.
(everyone here seems to like ROCKAUTO, in my opinion....i wouldnt put anything INTERNAL from them)

Protege isn't boosted its bone stock other than Sri. My 323 is boosted

Rock auto wants $475 for a master rebuild with timing belt kit. Guess I'm going to pull the head off this weekend and see if it dropped a valve. If not then ill assume spun bearing and will see if the crank is re usable or not

ebay has cheaper kits than that, with quality bearing such as KING or ACL, when ppl come to buy new rod's n main's and they bring a sample, its usually a rock or engine tech bearing.

stay away from those brands for internals , unless you wanna have to crack it open again 6,000 miles down the road.

Well no rebuilding it now, attempted to take it to my moms where I could start pulling it apart. Pieces of the motor are scattered all over the road

i got my short block for about $80 out here im sure if u find a u pull it yard in Va u can get a short block for bout 100

Tweety - my buddy in Norfolk has a spare FS that he's been just holding onto until his MSP let go.

If he's back from deployment and wants to - you may have a cheap option right there. Want?

Depending on price and time frame yes, I just got a trade offer for a civic that runs and comes with an h22 motor and trans

Not really I still have the 323 Gtx ( rare enough to make the protege mp3 look like a civic) and the Mazda 3

I'm simply replacing the daily which with my job needs to be a disposable car

So has anyone heard of the bolts on rod caps backing off before? Never pulled the pan off but looking through the hole we happens to see the rod cap laying there seemingly unharmed.

Oil pan has never been off. It was just laying in there with no bolts or anything in it. I just thought it was weird

yea very weird but the oil pan had to have been off at some time to replace the gasket mayb the PO of the car replaced bearings n didnt tighten to spec and they came undone?

My fiance bought the car with 65k granted she didn't take care of it at all which we've had multiple talks about. I know for a fact it hasn't been touched since then and I doubt it would take 120k miles to happen

Although multiple times of being run low on oil and not changing it probly took a toll on it. I'm suprised it lasted as long as it did. I figure the oil pump died, spun a rod bearing, or the rod cap bolts backed out. Not that it's my problem to deal with or anything now

Hey my man

Did you ever come to a conclusion here? I did the same thing three weeks back. It was ticking for quite a while as well. My spark plug is actually bent so I know for sure the rod came loose in there. I am gonna start tearing into it cuz I got nothing to lose, still have loan payments to make on it.

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Mine threw a rod through the block. That was the conclusion car is gone and the search is on for another one eventually

You may have had a Vic's screw back out
