Spun Bearing Question

I am pretty much going to get straight to the point and answer questions as they come up.

Is the ONLY way to spin a rod bearing is by having either low or no oil? My mechanic is telling me I ran my car out of oil (which was totally rebuilt last July by him and he had the crankshaft ground +/- .02" without putting oversized bearings on). I have had an oil leak since it was rebuilt (started small with break-in oil and grew a little after the 700 mile oil change) but was not able to work out a time to get it back to him.

I have only put 3000 miles on it since July and have continually checked the oil until last Wednesday when it went clackity clack. I checked the oil level once I pulled over and it was still within the XXXXX marks on the dipstick.

Now with all this said I know you can spin a bearing by means other then no or low oil because it just happened. I am in the process of either starting a lawsuit against him since he will not warranty his work or depending on the feedback, I might just part her out.

Thanks for any advice/feedback.

Over reving can also be a cause.

Also hardware that was used

not properly torquing the bolts could cause this. not having the engine clean or dirt/derbies can cause this also. lots of things can cause this really.

He did at least clean the block and all associated parts when the engine was out. Just looking back, I think him grinding the crank and not changing the rod bearing ID has come to be a problem. He keeps telling me everything was within tolerance but, the bearings were purchased before the crank was worked on. So if the crank from the factory was already at the low end of tolerance and he ground .02" off I would think we could have fallen out of tolerance.

All replacement parts were either OEM or brand names so I'm thinking the hardware for the most part is not an issue.

the bearing clearance shouldn't be a problem even if its "looser" as long as you run the appropriate viscosity oil for that clearance.
