spin-on oil filter conversion for MS3?

I've noticed that quite a few people have converted their Mazdaspeed 3s using, what appears to be the OE oil filter housing designed for the 2.0l / 2.3l NON-turbo engines.

Is this a good idea?

I really would prefer the screw on type oil filter, but I wonder why Mazda would have developed a completely different cartridge style setup for the Turbo models?

there's a conversion kit for a ms3

Yes, the conversion "kits" that I have seen consists of the Mazda oil filter housing (from the 2.0l), gasket, and the option of spin on oil filters.

My original question still stands....

I did it on mine a week or so ago. No leaks, and it'll be easier (and cheaper) to do the changes in the future. I don't know why it's a different unit. From what I've read, the Euro Speeds have the spin-on filters.

I think it's a great idea. I've bought a stock of K&N HP 2009 filters (Amazon has 'em on sale), so I"m pretty well fixed for two years or so. This conversion allows you to use the filter from the B3000 pickup. More capacity means better cooling.

Found this today:

It's a bit cheaper than I paid for mine (sad1), but I'll have to live with that.

Whoops, that one WILL NOT work (no oil cooler connection). Go here, it's where I got mine:

So the housing you received was different than the one pictured?
If you're addressing me, yes, mine has the oil cooler connection on top, which is why it was more expensive. Sorry, I should have just deleted the link to the "regular 3" unit.

I've heard that the K&N filters shouldn't be used with synthetic oils, any one else heard this because it sounds like bs?

Sounds like BS. I've been overpaying for years, but autozone here doesn't sell wix and I'm not going to touch a FRAM. Nice thing about the spin-on is you can use larger filters.

Do you think that the Mobil and K&N filters provide any more protection then a WIX filter? I guess I also planned on just using the 06 Tribute filters.

Not really. I got them just becuase of the welded nut on the bottom. I too am using the tribute filters.

What the hell is the deal with the sst for the cartridge cap on the ms3. I bought a 76mm 15 point wrench and it didn't work, so I went back and tried 3 more, none of them fit correctly. Definitely doing this conversion.
