Speed6 Tranny - Stupid Reverse?

I don't know how, if possible, to post a Poll.. but i'd like some ideas on this topic...

Is the reverse in the speed6 more or less a "stupid" design flaw? Most 6 speed vehicles place reverse near 6th gear...

I almost had my car totaled today when a retarded at a tire shop.. thinking it was in reverse... drove forwards a foot or two... almost into the building... Placing Reverse and 1st in the same position is asking for trouble!

After a day or two of driving, I got used to the setup.. and haven't missed reverse or first.. since... but even still, seems like a really stupid design error.

Celica GTS's have the same reverse placement. When you engage reverse, an annoying dinging sounds. Annoying but good sometimes.

Like you said though, it just takes a few drives to get it down.

I seriously doubt your car would have been totaled. That said, I drove an old 3 speed car a long time ago in which first gear was where second usually is and reverse is where first normally goes. The lesson is, any time you get in a new car, make sure you check how the gears are arranged.

Saabs are the same as well (at least the older ones IIRC).

well the design to my opinion is pretty good.
first, you have to push down to engage reverse.
second, imagine that you are doing 80 mph on the highway of course ;) and you
place it in reverse (if it was close to the sixth).
Now you are in for tranny changing.

Exactly what I was about to say.
I thought it was a strange design but Commen sense tells me why, cause of the scenario, you just noted.

Wolkswagons are the same way. You have to push down to get into reverse, so its easy to tell when you are in reverse...

my dad used to have a '94 5 spd Opel Astra, reverse was the same, near the first gear

I remember the first time I drove a 3 series bmw and I couldn't get it in reverse. God I felt so stun. It's in the same spot, but with the bmw you really had to shift it quick and hard in order to get it to go in. Of course me being careful with the car, I was trying to gently.

Reminds me of a video of this stupid kid street racing his VW GTi. He had it in reverse instead of first gear. The light turned green and he went FLYING backwards...LMAO!! Almost slammed his head into the dash...LOL

I've never driven a 6 speed with reverse after 6. I'm so used to R being where it is on most six speeds because I've driven a lot of VWs though...

My 6 speed (hyundai tiburon) has reverse to the right of 6th grear. To engage reverse you have to pull up on a little ring below the shift knob as you push to the right beyond 6 gear and it pops into reverse. It's very simple and I have never had a problem going into reverse.
