SPEED LIMITER or REV LIMITER

First off I'm a newb on your board here. Just want to say greetings to everyone. I am usually on an Accord board but I recently bought a MAZDA 3 5-door, and I must say I love it (bow) . I have one concern though and I have seen that Nathan G put this question out there but I saw no definite answer to it. I also got my M3 to 120 at which point the s*** was scared out of me when the speed limiter(or rev limiter not sure which it is. I've been told both names) kicked in. Needless to say I was kinda pissed (protest) because I had plenty of power left. So after all that my questions are: 1. Is that a speed limiter, rev limiter or governer. 2. How do you disable it or remove it. Any help would be appreciated.

From what I gathered of other discussions, it is is a computer based speed limiter. Thus, it looks like everyone gets to wait for a mod chip to be made (one without the "stop acceleration when speed hits XXX" component) before it can be disabled.

I'm not sure if there is a rev limiter, I have never tried to push it to redline. What RPM's/gear were you in when you hit 120?

as far as i know our cars have no speed governer - chris

I DON'T THINK THERE IS A REV LIMITER , I GOT MY ACCEL. STUCK
UNDER MY FLOORMAT ONE MORNING WHEN I WAS GETTING IN AND STARTED
THE ENGINE, BEFORE I KNEW IT THE CAR HAD REV'D ALL THE WAY UP TO OVER 8,000 RPM (PINNED) THE TACH, FOR AT LEAST 5-6 SECONDS AND IT
DIDN'T HICK-UP THE WAY A LIMITER WOULD HAVE MADE IT...!!! I PANICKED
AND JUST SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN, THEN REALIZED THE ACCEL WAS STUCK...!!! OH"CRAP... I THOUGHT, BUT NOTHING REALLY HAPPENED...!!

I hit the rev limiter the other day. It kicked in around 7200 or 7300 rpm's. Like throwing out an anchor. It surprised me until I realized what it was.

There is a rev limiter that comes in around 7200/7300 AND a top speed limiter of 117 MPH. I have experienced the 7200 limiter more than one time. (wink)
Others on this forum have put the car against the 117 top speed limiter. ( as you have also).

I really don't understand why you would want to go faster. It's not like you could ever go that high on the track both for dragracing or autocross. My advice would have to be just don't go that fast and you'll never have a problem. I mean no offense at all in any of this

i have gone faster than 117 on flat road.... never hit a limiter!!!!

I wanna say it was the limiter.....some cars don't have limiters but due to areal drag it won't reach it's max top speed...but close to it. If you get rid of the limiter it will never get to 150 on the street...maybe the dyno but not on the street. and as for trap speed...i seen higher than 117mph on that and yes if you decide to take you car to germany with you (Mil) than it would be better to loose the limiter.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I know I was not near the 7200 rpm range, so it was definitly the speed limiter. Funny you should mention Germany, because that is excactly where I plan on taking the car next year once I get orders there. That is my main concern on being able to drive faster than 120 mph. Guess I'll just have to wait for the new chip and hope it comes out before I'm sitting in Germany with a nice cold beer (thinkbeer

Unless you get arrested for reckless driving!! (lol)
unless he is refering to germany.....got the autobahn...but don't be surprised if the limiter was disabled til 145-150mph....still have cars going faster than that...as stated before srt just for example has no limiter and only thing holding it back is areal drag....srt-4 is driven by mil there via aafes new car sales sales(wink) Just naming a car that you can actuly see as it goes past you cause the other cars are too much of a blur to see...just hear "zeeeeeeeee"

I spent 6 years there(germany). I'm still not used to driving slow yet since being back in the stated. Maybe once I do get a ticket or thrown in jail I'll slow down (doh)
