Speed costs, how fast do you want to go?

Hello all. Edmunds.com did an article on a 2007 MS3. The car was equipped with a MS CAI($399) and a MS CBE ($729). The car in stock form did 0 to 60 in 5.9 seconds, and the 1/4 mile in 14.2 at 100.1 mph. The car equipped with the mazdaspeed parts did 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 14.1 at 100.7 mph. I know you can get the parts for less,but.....$1128 for something so close? I'm now not in such a hurry, for my cobb sri or cp-e cai on my daily driver. Thanks.

dont look at those numbers. theres to much human factor in that

not to mention a CBE does nothing power wise for these cars (from what ive read)

look at dyno numbers, thats a more realistic performance gauge

An intake that makes 15-20whp is going to increase trap speed, given all other factors are equal, a bit more than .6 mph. Should be more like 3-4mph.

With that type of money you're better off just going with a CAI and a 3.25 or 3.5" TMIC from ETS. You'll get better 0-60 and better quarters guaranteed, and it'll be a little less money. As for the catback exhaust, it's a waste of money unless you're going to install a downpipe to match it.

driver skill and tire grip are going to play into 1/4 mile times a LOT. as others have said, true exhaust-related power is going to come from a downpipe (or maybe a test pipe) as the downpipe area is where most of the exhaust restriction is.

would the TMIC from ETS really make a big difference? perhaps on sequential runs due to heat-soaking, but does upgrading the intercooler help initially as well? maybe the stocker induces a huge pressure drop?

Up to a 4psi drop on the stock intercooler. I've always been fan of the saying, "less is better." The less piping you have, the less boost drop you'll get.

It does cost more to get more power that's for sure. In my case I figure the car can likely just break into the 13's and that's fine for my DD. 0-1320ft isn't why I bought the car. If I want faster I will go drive/ride my other rides.

The nice thing is the MS3 has great mid range usable power. Stacks up well against many larger more powerful cars IMO and has never left me needing more getting on it while cruising the roads I drive.

Who ever was driving those two SPD 3's needs a class on driving.... I ran the 1/4 in 14.1 STOCK. That was my first time to the track with the my SPD 3. Next time I`m confident I will run a 13.9 (STOCK) with some more practice on controlling wheel spin!

turbo FWD cars are the worst to get down the 1/4 from what i've been told. the only cars i've taken to the 1/4 are FWD compacts, one of which was a low-power and the second being a MS3-type power turbo car without an LSD. launching and 1st gear were huge traction issues.

if i added mods i'd rather go for noise than power - i want to hear what the car is up to. adding more power for a faster 1/4 time is worthless without some drag slicks...?
