Speaker sharpness

Hi there,

I'm not very experienced in the way of car audio, but I recently had a system installed into my car and am having a little trouble with the sound quality.

This is what I have installed:
Raammat Sound Deadener w/ Ensolite Foam
Alpine 9831 Head Unit
Kicker KS6.2 Component speakers (front doors)
Kicker KS60 Coaxial speakers (rear doors)
Kicker CVR10 Subwoofer (in Bassworx ported enclosure)
Kicker ZX350.4 4 Channel Amp (supplying the speakers)
Alpine MRP-M350 Mono Amp (supplying the subwoofer)

The problem is, I am noticing that the vocals and sometimes the instruments in the music I'm listening to sound a little harsh or sharp. I'm trying to determine what could be causing this, and whether there is anything I can do to correct it. I've tried adjusting the equalizer settings on the head unit, but it doesn't seem to quite do the trick. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The component speakers come with a crossover. Usually the crossover box has a jumper on it to soften the tweeters by -3db or -6db. The installer probably put these crossover boxes in the car doors but if you go back to them they should be able to help you out. Just describe what you are hearing and they will be able to help you tune the system.

Also, some speakers have a "break-in" period. Give them a few hours of listening before you pass final judgment on the system. Listen to lots of different recordings during that time and you may find that some music sounds just fine while other stuff is a bit edgy. Bring that music with you to the install shop when you go to talk to them.

do not use any bass, treble or EQ settings unless you have an Eq. Same thing on the amps, no bass boost or other nonsense.

positioning may be to blame as well. If the tweeter is up high by your head and the mid is down at your ankles, then the sound from the tweeter will be overpowering.

Lastly, it is very possible that you just do not like the sound of the speakers you have purchased.

I figured there must be a way to adjust the levels through the crossover, but I couldn't find anything in the instructions that came with the speakers. I'll take a look and give your suggestion a try. Thanks for the help!

the KS series does not appear to come with an adjustable crossover.
