im finally looking to upgrade my door speakers.. but im not an audio person by any means usually if u buy the most expensive it means the best but not in speakers i hear..so anyone wanna reccomend anything im tired of these stock things that i think are blown any ways cause they sound so distored when the volume is up to 20 so what do u guys think i should look at ?thanx--mattman

If you have a little money to spend I suggest boston acoustics. With that sound, you have to go and test speakers out by different makers and decide which ones you like best. For me it was boston acoustics, and I've never looked back. I love my pro components, and mostly anyone that sits in my car loves them too...

*edit* if you went that route, you would need an amp to run them to their potential though

ahh thanx alot...so basically better sound because of more wires. thats prolly what ill go with just have to decide on a set now

Boston Acoustics speakers aren't worth their price.

You are the final judge when it comes to speakers so I recommend you make your way to a local car audio store (not BestBuy/Circuit City, but an independent store) and listen to some speakers. Bring a mix CD of your favorite songs so you can demo them. It will be pretty obvious which ones are for you based on price and sound. Expect to pay between $150 and $275 for a pair of decent separates. $350-400 will get you a nice set and $800 will get you a really nice set. Brands like DLS, Focal, Diamond, Alpine, and Infinity make nice speakers but don't limit yourself by brand. The P5 has 6x8 speakers up front so you can fit 6x8, 5x7, 5.25, and 6.5 inch speakers. Round speakers require a little additional work but it will broaden your selection to choose from.

The setup I recommend to everyone is a set of separates/components, a small 8" or 10" subwoofer and a 4 channel amp to power them. Rear speakers can remain stock and the stock head unit can be used or upgraded at a later time. The following setup would cost anywhere from $500 to $2000 depending on the amount of bass you want and level of sound quality you want to achieve.

Check out the $500 and $1000 audio challenge sticky threads for some ideas on equipment.

Hey Chuyler,

Just a question on your DLS components. How do you like the sound know that they have broken in and if you don't mind what did you pay for them? I've got a friend who just picked up the line at his shop and I'm getting tempted to buy them for the Accord and build some kicks for the mid and tweet. PM me the price if you don't want to post it.

Thanks,

how are tweeter sizes from aftermarket components compared to the stock tweeter for an msp (i'm assuming p5s have them too). i dont really want to have to make a bigger hole or a whole new compartment, as opposed to just replacing the stock tweeter

Just about any 3/4" to 1" tweeter will fit in the stock location. Each tweeter is different so its hard to say without seeing them. Sometimes you can remove the tweeter from its plastic housing and get it to fit a little better.

My Eclipse 3/4" tweeters fit in the stock panel without removing them from their housing ...

My DLS Iridiums however (1.77" mounting diameter) didn't have a chance...

Yeah, it actually sounds a little better. The stage is higher and farther out on the dash. However, there is a little more reflection from the windshield and the lowest attenuation setting on the crossovers has to be used to blend with the rest of the drivers in my car. I'm actually going to be running them active once I finish my new amp rack (active means each speaker/tweeter gets a dedicated amplifier channel).
