2003.5 Metallic Mazdaspeed Protege
I installed a vibrant turbo back exhaust today at a friends house and on the way home it ran great. It sounded awesome and the car drove fine. There was no check engine light or anything
Then, as i was pulling in my driveway and i put the car in reverse, It died.
I looked down and the car had overheated and now it wont crank.
I have plenty of coolant and everything seems fine......
I have no idea what to do!!

How bad did it overheat, and how long did you drive it when it was overheated? Mine did that but because of the water pump going out, blew the head gasket, I didn't drive too far with it overheating, but that's why mine has a new head. Maybe the thermostat?

Here's a little more info..

Does it have any life in it at all? (when you open your driver's door, does the little red light come on, do any of your lights work?)
Does your alarm work? Alarm/disarm?

Yeah i mean everything works fine it just wont crank up
It's so bizzare
Honestly i dont know how long it was over heated for but it couldnt have been TOO long. My friend only lives maybe 10mins away
i mean it drove fine like everything was normal.
That's why i didnt notice the temp

Does the exhaust have anything to do with it maybe??

I forget if the Vibrant is a true TBE, or if it bolts to the s-pipe?

I've installed two true TBEs, and both times I drained the coolant and yanked the radiator--in which case overheating could absolutely be related to the exhaust install. If it bolts to the s-pipe, then disregard the above... lol

Explain the symptoms a little more... you say it overheated? How high was the temp gauge? Did you open the radiator cap (after the car cooled down) to check coolant level, or did you just look at the overflow tank? What kind of temps outside? How hard were you driving the car on that 10 min drive?

In regards to the failure to start, does it crank but not fire, or does it not even crank? If it doesn't even turn over, do you hear a click or anything when you turn the key? All of your electrical accessories work fine? How did it die--did it lurch to a stop suddenly, or did it sputter and die?

I'm not seeing the failure to start being related to the overheating in a mechanical sense--at least not in the sense that you seized the motor or anything. One thing that would make sense is if you broke the inner accessory belt that drives the alternator and the water pump. If that belt goes, you lose your ability to charge the battery or generate power, and the ability to circulate coolant--that's both your symptoms right there. Check your belts--there should be two of them. And try jump-starting the car as well.

It's cold as s*** out (kinda snowing) And i was driving it kinda hard but like i said it was snowing so i was kinda taking it easy
and yeah coolant was fine.
Everything was
Oh yeah and the temp gauge was all the way hot

I really dont know if it's true turbo back or not haha
How do i know?
haha i know i sound like a moron
It came in three pieces, one with the muffler and what not and then one with the cats and 02 sensors and then one that bolted up under the motor
So i thin it is

Oh yeah and the air went kind of cold too.
I forgot to mention it.
I had the heat on and as soon as it happened almost it went pretty cool.
Not ice cold but it definatley wasnt hot

with the air going cool sounds like the water pump wasn't workin....

do you still have both belts on the car??

subbin...
i love a good story...
but very sorry to hear of your misshap :(

and i agree check to see if you have both your belts...
if your thermostat was stuck open/closed you would throw a CEL
see if the motor is seized... grab a 19mm or 22mm can't remember and try spinning the crank

yeah i'll check that tomorrow.
I mean it's wierd that my car starts messing up immediatley after i put on the exhaust but has nothing to do with it
Ive only had it maybe a month and a half

Check the fuse box under the dashboard for the engine control unit 10 amp fuse it's the number 14. I was driving on the freeway and the engine shut off I check the fuse box and that fuse was burned out I change for a new one and burned out again so I open the hood and I check everything and the positive post of the battery was touching the battery holder so I move the battery and that fix the problem.

Yeah but i went out and checked it this morning and the temp gauge was still all the way on hot

I doubt it was your exhaust that did this but just allowed you to uncover something. happens to me all the time, replace a dead battery and find out im hemmoraging coolant everywhere.

Wait, so your temp gauge was all the way on hot after sitting all night? I'm smelling an electrical gremlin now.

Also, you never answered my questions with regards to how the car died and more detail on the symptoms. When we can't see your car in person, good details make all the difference in being able to track down problems...

when the guage is all the way up like that it means you have a blown fuse....I'm pretty sure of this. Start checking fuses and let us know!

VVV What this guy said. I think he is right!

Check the fuse box under the dashboard for the engine control unit 10 amp fuse it's the number 14. Despite other symptoms ff the car is not cranking at all and the battery is tested as ok (use a tester or swap batteries) then you either have a dead starter or a fuse issue.

Yeah the car just died quitely. No noise or anything. I didnt even relize it was off until i tried to drive

Okay so yeah the water pump is okay.

And i tried jumping the car and that didnt work.
So i still need to check the fuses....
How do i go about this?lol
What do i do if one is messed up and how do i know?

there will be a black smudge where it blew and you can see the metal from the fuse broken. just take them out one by one.

Sounds like the "INJ" fuse under the hood. I know with that fuse removed the temp gage will read all the way hot and the car will not start. I'm not sure which fuse it is but under the fuse box cap there should be a little map and one of the boxes should say "INJ". Find that corresponding fuse and check its condition. As to how this could relate to an exhaust install make sure no wires are touching the exhaust. Burning through a wire is an easy way to blow a fuse.

Yeah I'll check in a minute, but if that's the case, how do i got about replacing it?
