so school me on piston rings

I was thinking this was something you could not do without pulling the engine / having major work done. I had a friend tell me that it was just a matter of replacing the rings?

The rings go in grooves in the pistons and seal between piston and cylinder wall. Now exactly what part of disconnecting pistons from crank to get them out of the cylinder so rings can be replaced does your friend not understand? This isn't somethin unique to these motors either. The head will have to come off, the oil pan will have to come off and then you CAN get them out without pulling block from car but to maintenance things in the very center of an engine = major work whether the block comes out or not IMO. No short cut for ring replacement.

Not only will the oil pan have to come off but so will the windage tray. Removing the windage tray with the engine still in the car is not a simple task. There are two bolts in the windage tray that are blocked by the bell housing. There is a thread on here about drilling two holes in the bell housing to access the bolts, so it can be done.
