So, about how much does it cost to put in a new clutch?

clutch is starting to slip, I was thinking about how much it would cost to have the thing replaced. A new clutch kit, online is about $400, but since the tranny has to be removed, I'm guessing it is not going to be easy.

of course, option B is that there is just some oil spilled on the plate thingy and it will clear upi by normal use
(option C being selling it and getting a new car)

I realize that I probably COULD do this, but about how much should I pay my mechanic so it's done right?

(edit:) I cant drive the car right now, and I havent driven it much at all for the last month, so maybe when I pulled it out the other day it was just from disuse?

there is a seller on ebay with exedy oem replacment clutch kits. I bought one 6 months ago, all bearings were japan made and everything was good quality. Its holding strong and was only $140 shipped

140 isn't so bad, but now it's working fine!

It just stopped slipping and started working normally yesterday.
Is it normal for the tranny to be covered in oil? (the engine is bone dry)... I think it is leaking.

Could be one of 2 things. either your slave cylinder is leaking or your input shaft seal is leaking. either one will get oil all over the place and either one will make the clutch slip. The slave cylinder is on the front of the transmission and the way it is on there, brake fluid can get into the transmission and on the clutch if it is leaking.

you are looking at around $500 for parts and labor. but here's the deal, find out at your local community college if there's an auto dept. the students there will do it for free under direct supervision of an ASE certified instructor.
most of the students will actually do a good job because their grade depends on it. you will just have to find other ways of getting around because it usually takes a week to get it done. makes sure you have the parts ready if you want it done faster. and there are plenty of parts on ebay for sale.

I just had to buy another clutch because one of the guide pins on the flywheel came out and ruined it along with the tranny. $100 at autozone for clutch kit including bearings.
