Snow, Hills, and Burning.

Ok so I am a dumba$$. I parked on a hill last night, 60 degree incline. Snowed 3 inches. I needed to get out so I started the car and the wheels spun, tach went to 5,000 and I stopped. No luck. I smelled something burning. It smelled like tires burning. I have never experienced this in a car before as all of my cars have been AWD or RWD. I know we have summer tires on so I want to be sure that I did not do anything bad to the car. I got out after I feathered the clutch and throttle at about 2k to 3k RPM. I have 500 miles on the car and I think I just f'd something up. Hope not as the car is fantastic.

all you probably did was got the tires hot....

I once saw a guy getting his car up a hill that had a lot of ice on it....he started up the hill till the car didn't have enough traction to move...and he stayed on it....the tires kept spinning...made enough heat to not only MELT the ice till the tires got traction...but left a black streak up the hill......

I am sure all you did was spin the tires till they got hot.....your car just didn't go anywhere......

(stash)

IF your even driving this car with summers on in snow........don't even get me started.

You burned out the tires dude! 5000 rpms, spinning? Yup, you just burned out your tires.

Now, do you know how much these tires are? If you do this a lot, you'll be finding out a lot sooner then the rest of us. With a tread rating of 140, you don't need to help wear these things out faster :)

I just hope to god you won't end up wrapped around a light pole somewhere because you got the bridgestones on.

Thanks all,

Nah, If I was moving I think I would have been ok but I was parked and I tried to go. On the subject of tires, what is the offset of our rims?

Thanks,

John

i still got the potenzas on lmao

the rating works like this.....the lower the number, the more grip on pavement, but the shorter they last. You can probably say off the record that the lower the number, the worse they are in snow as well.

For comparison, the dunlops were 260-280, something like that, is REALLY high /good for a Z rated tire. It's not really easy to rate a tread rating from one company to another though....but I do it anyhow. A normal every day tire would be rated a lot higher then these

I'm no tire expert by any means, but that's my understanding.

Yeah, I'd say 60 degree is a BIT of an overexagerration.

A really steep ski/snowboard run is about 45-50 degrees...

So, if the Dunlops of the Mp3 were 260-280, and our Potenza's are only 140, doesn't that mean that our life of the tire will only last about half of what you guys are running on?
What's a normal # for thread wear?? let's say a set of all seasons.

different brands ratings are like comparing apples to oranges...not really a standardized scale...

Well, my Old Civic when stock, she had potenza's, as well as some preludes, and they had a rating of 260 - 280 as well, and didn't last for s***. About as long as the the Dunlops are lasting for sure, but the Dunlops are low profile Z's vs the R's at a much higher profile. The Prelude/Civic tires should last much longer then the dunlops, but so far, they are about the same. So the rating seems on par so far.

I hate Bridgestone tires. And their LOUD tires too. I'd even sell them to get a different tire before I even drove the car for the 1st time I hate them that much. They might be sticky, but if every other bridgestone tire that I've had is an example, then these aren't going to last long at all. Maybe 1 summer.

My BFG R1's were rated at 0 treadwear.

I got lazy one year and left my Toyo T1 Plus rubber on too long. My car was immobilized in 2cm of snow. I had to wait till the snow melted so I could go home and slap the snows on.

As soon as I sell the old snows we used on the A4 Jetta (POS) I'm going to buy snows for the P5. Snows would have been handy today though!
