I just had a couple of smoked eels. They are the bomb. This lady I work with is from holland and she brought some back with her.

I have had it in sushi from the Japanese Rest. near my house. I dont know what they do to prepare it there. Smoked it is really good. There were a couple of big suckers in there. I had 2 that were about a foot long each. She had one in there that was about 2 feet long.

She said they catch them all the time over there and salt them and then smoke them. I want more.

Dutch are all about fish. Good herrings.

I've only had the eel with sushi, which I do like.

unhealthy, but good.

look up siroopwafelen
Yeah, she knew exactly what you were talking about. Started going off in dutch and what not. She said she will try and get some for me next time she visits or her kids visit. That sounds real good.

I eat sushi like a madman. At least once a week. I just had "Naruto" it wasnt on the menu. We got hooked up with it by the chef. It was a roll that is wrapped in cucumber instead of rice. Inside was avocado, eel, and crab. Much lighter than the traditional rice roll and the cucumber makes it nice and crunchy.

that's your naruto?
Weird.. I think our Naruto here is egg rolled on rice... I gotta go have sushi again.. it's been too long since i've gone out (boom03)

^^^ Something could be lost in translation. I may have it wrong too. It was damn good stuff. I usually get a signature roll with eel, avocado, and spicy crunchy stuff.

and Miso soup. That s*** rocks my world. They love us at the place we go to. THey should since we spend about 300 a month there easy.

hahaha. damn. i make my own miso soup, out of the packet :P

and sushi.. I have it once a month, maybe less. I can rarely justify spending $50 on something that acts like appetizer.

I know it is way expensive. I usually pay one time then my girlfriend pays the next. It is essentially the only time we ever go out to eat. Plus neither of us really drink anymore so I spend the money on food instead.

I was going to try making sushi, at least try making california rolls, but it looks a little tricky. The roll I like the best is 13 bucks for 8 pieces. Sucks.

I bought some frozen edamame. That was good, I will have to try the miso soup from the package.

Yeah I hear that...me and my girlfriend usually do the same thing (switch paying)

You should go ahead and try making your own. It's fun, especially the first time when you make lopsided, falling-apart rolls.

Find a fish market near you that gets daily shipments of fresh fish and pick up some raw fish. Just ask if it's fresh enough for sushi (if it's from a real market and not a supermarket, it usually is)

**NOTE**
Beware eating raw fish and handling it yourself.
There are many types of fish that sushi restaurants will/must freeze for 48hrs in order to kill all bacteria. I don't remember which ones, but I know there are some (read up on it online, or ask your local sushi chef)

Which is why you ask the people at the market whether or not the fish is fresh enough for sushi.

If it's fresh enough, it does not require freezing.

The chef said to get good fish we should drive down to Boston and pick it up. I would start with some of the safer sushi to make usuing smoked salmon and cooked crab and move on after that.

Yup, one of the perks of living near the ocean -- good fresh fish is easy to find.

Actually.. some fish live with bacteria in them that can be troublesome for humans in ingest. So they buy the fresh fish, freeze for 2 days and then thaw and serve it.
The guy at the fish store won't know how the sushi chef prepares his sushi. So your best bet is to ask the chef next time you go out.

Ontario has actually passed laws on this matter that certain types of fish must be frozen before they can be served raw.

I read that some of the chef's will actually cut pieces off of live fish to make the sushi. That is some fresh fish.
