When I purchased my 5 used, there was only one key that came with the car. I have been thinking, and now have some questions... 1) The smart key is basically a three button fob with an integrated key. Could the fob off of my 2003 protege, also a three button fob, be programmed to work in conjunction with a single cut key? 2) I believe I read that without the smart key, the vehicle would not start, but if I were to have a single cut key, could access to the interior of the car be made? 3) I had to take apart my "smart" key and fix it because the part that houses the key was spreading. There are some springs inside and a small screw (access is under the flying M on the key) that holds the two halves of the key assembly together, but there is no metal connector between the fob part and the key, so are we really sure that the car actually "senses" the key in the ignition key hole as we are told it does?
