SLS Midpipe pass smog?

:
Mazda Protege 5 Turbo
Just like the title says. I'm in California which has very strict regulations about smog emissions. I know the stock mid pipe is very restrictive and i was to up the midpipe without messing up my chances of messing up my smog check.

do they hook you up to a machine to test the exhaust there in cali? i know in new york they dont unless your 1996 and older, here you just get OBDII checked for engine light and general thigns checked like brakes and suspension. if so id deff go with the hi flow catted one and if you fail keep your stock midpipe around for when the time comes

No dude, just make sure all CEL are off and you should be ok. I have an exhaust leak (and a few other things) where the mid and res pipe meet but the dude i went to cleared my CEL and said to "take it through a car cycle to see when (how many miles) the CEL comes back on", then, he told me, "unplug the battery to reset the comp and drive till just before the CEL ( butt save your self enough miles to get to the shop and to run the dyno) and come back." Anyways i was impatient and didnt even go through a car cycle. Musta drove maybe 30 miles max before i went back and PASSED! But i did use to have to pay off some asian dude $150 bucks to pass my wonderful, yet, illegally modified VW Golf YEARS ago.... ahhh the memories..... *puffs and passes*

I have been a lurker for about a year and decided to finally register and chat. I am in San Diego and have a custom midpipe with a cat and was passed. They only did an OBDII and a quick look over.

thanks for the info. Sounds like ill be okay. I'm going to use the stock msp mid-pipe to prevent any BS. I've been wondering if they would say anything about my Turbolife FMIC. But i was thinking that it wouldn't matter because it's only giving me more air anything else.

cali has CARB, which makes it a ******* sh*tbox for modding cars. just look at the intakes - a CARB legal one (AEM, INJEN) is 250-300 bucks, but ones from weaponr or whoever is like 120. yeah, you pay for the brand to an extent, but you pay to have them test it for CARB too.

if you get an inspector who follows the rules and knows what a modded car looks like, just an intake can make you fail. intercooler can make you fail. midpipe can DEFINITELY make you fail. its all in who you end up with, and dont be surprised if you have to find less wholesome dealers (or methods) to get you to pass.

Everything on the car will be legal except my Turbolife FMIC. I have injen cai with CARB on it. That should be fine. Other than that, it's a go. What im also worried about is my 3" thermal exhaust. I hope it wont be too loud but i have a real good feeling that it will be. (my car isn't running yet)

I had an SLS Midpipe with high flow cat and I passed every test except idle which i was like double the max for idle emissions so I failed. After that I put the stock pipe back on and was like less than 10% of max. Cats do there job I suppose. Also if you reset your ECU make sure it completes a full cycle of self checks otherwise thats a fail as well. I will do a basic visual inspection vac, exhaust, gas cap if there is something with those that looks ****** up or rigged they will mess with you.

When you say full cycle check. Is that something that would take long or is that something that gets down after a spin around the block? My engine bay looks well modified only because of the FMIC pipping. Other than that im good.

mechanics typically say 100 miles, but thats just to reassure the checks were all done, for example i think its evap requires the car to be at peak temperature then sit for 6 hours with ignition off obvioulsy

I live in AZ and they just do the OBDII and the evap check from the gas cap. I am having an issue getting the dam thing to go through the full cycle. It shows up as evap system ready, heated O2 ready, but the catalyst, EGR, and the O2 is not. Do you have any ideas on how to get it there. I am planning on moving to Cali within the next year and would really like it to be up to par here before I get there. 2001 Mazda Protege MP3 is the car.
