Skunk2 vs. Ground Control

I've seen two companys make coilovers for the protege 5, ground control and skunk 2, if there any others out there that are for the protege 5? Does anyone have coilovers on their protege 5 as of now, if so, how is the ride, how is the camber... what is the drop?

I currently have the Ground-Control Coilovers. I baught them when I first got the car back in July. At that time they only offered one setup, which lowers the car about 1.5 inches at the highest setting. They now offer taller springs as well that will leave the car at about stock height when at the highest setting. The ride is a little bumpier, but that will happen no matter what when you lower a car. It is no where near uncomfortable though. For an idea of height, check here: http://www.geocities.com/ekinpete The pictures with the stock rims should give you an idea of how low the car sits with my setup. The newer rims are 18" and change the look but you can still tell it is lowered.

Ok, well i have the Eibach sport line and i have it dropped 2in in the front and 1.5 in the back but i got the springs a month and a half ago. There is no way that they had the springs out in July, im sorry. If they did i would have had them put on when i bought the car in August. Im not callin u a liar but it sounds strange unless u got a hook up. H & R springs i heard were better than Skunk2 but is a little more difficult to put on. The ride is great though . :o :D

I would get Ground-Control's, since they ride and perform better than Skunk2's, which are stiff as hell.

Plus, you can get custom spring rates with the GC's, at no extra charge! :)

H&R's have springs now for the P5?

KOREY CHAOS:
sorry to break it to you bud but ground controls have had the coil overs since may of last year when i bought my car so yellowpr5 is not lying. I think you should do some research before you make any statements such as that. If you really want i'll tell you why they were ou then aswell. Well our chassis is the exact same chassis as the 2001 Prortege and ground controls made their coil overs for the protege which are the exact same fit for the P5. If you want to make sure call ground control cause thats what i did when i first got the car.

Well how is everyones tires holding up? This is my major concern. A friend of mine has to get new tires all the time because of his coilovers. Since some of you have had these for quite a while, hows the wear on the tires?

To add to Drews message, I've heard that if you change the height you have to get a alignment every time, that is why I am thinking about getting the eibach pro kit but I don't have the oppurtunity to lower it and raise as I please, I also agree with what drew said about the tires, help would be appreciated.

The wear on my tires is fine except my front left (Someone ran me off the road into a curb and I haven't gotten it alligned). If you don't lower the car much, you should be fine. If you lower it 2" or more, don't drive long without getting an allignment. It will be needed.

Uh......Skunk2 doesn't have any parts for Mazda. The Ground Controls have issues from what I've seen. Ask GReddy917, even when the GC's were at their highest, his car was a bit too low. ARD P5 has the H&R's on his P5 and the height is perfect. I'll post a pic if anyone wants to see.

hey I went to the h&r website and they don't have coilovers for our cars, is it even a coilover, it they are just springs how low do they lower the car front and back, I know the eibach pro kit does 1.2 in rear and something like 1.5 in the front, I would like it just a bit lower, show me a pic that would be great!

I have saw the ad for coilovers made for the protege 5 by skunk 2, unless it was just a misprint...

I would like to see the pics, because i doubt its too low, i have my car around 3 inchs off the ground all way around, and i want to go lower sometimes...

I didn't say H&R made coilovers. They have springs for our car and the coilover will be out in the coming months. I think someone may have misprinted the Skunk2 ad. It's a common mistake. I had the pic in my clubphoto album, but for some reason it's screwed up some how.

I can't really see how low it is because your car is black and was takin in the dark, do you have any other pictures?

That car could be lowerd a lot more, and it owuld look a lot better, it has a whole lot of room from the bottom of the car to the ground, so i would tuck the tires under the fenders. 1 of the reasons i like the protege 5 is because it has fender flairs, and you can probley tuck some of the rim on 17 inch wheel, if i owned one, it would be slammed to the ground.

I would only slam my MP3 for cruising nights or car shows. Other than that though, probably never. It's too harsh for daily driving and for my girl friend. ;) Chicks don't dig bumpy rides. Cars do look tight when they're dropped though. Like that one guy with 19"s on his green ES..

Who cares what chicks dig, its your car, girls should want you for more than your car, and if they don't take them for a ride, watch their tits bounce and **** them, then brang them back, and drop them off.

I have my car 3 inchs off the ground, with notthing but fiber glass bumpers, hood, fenders... if any of that bends it cracks, thats why you learn to drive a lowerd car, trust me, its an art when you're that low.

You make it sound like you can just raise it up and lower it anytime and everything will be okay, if you go turning the perch up and down, it will throw off your alighnment. if you want to do that, get bags!

Actually......you can do just that. I'm not sure how the Protege will react to constant raising and lowering, but both of the Civic I owned had coilovers on them. My 95 Coupe had GC's and my 97 had APEXi World Sports. On both of those I constantly raised and lowered the car and the tread on the tire never wore all that bad. My 97 only lost a little bit of tread on the inside and that was after 9000 miles of hard driving and constant height changes. So.....with saying that.....you do no need to get an alignment everytime you touch change the height. I aligned each car after I lowered them about 2 inches and they were fine. Now if you talking about raising it back to stock height then dumping it again, then that's a different story. OK, I'm done :D
